Beautiful Mail....

For awhile I am most likely going to be scarce around the blogging community but that doesn't mean I'll forget about all of you....and I hope you won't forget me either. And I won't be creating anything (except ideas in my head) until we get moved and settled because I have packed up my studio!

It's a smallish room and I had a ton of stuff in there. We decided that it wouldn't look too good for showing. We thought I might be able to pack up part of it and leave some things for later but when I began it was just too difficult to separate this from that so it all went into boxes.

The only thing readily available is my yarn and crochet hooks....but I have no ideas for them right now! Maybe I'll work on the black and white afghan I started for Molly last year!!

But all is not un-creative here. I have received some wonderful mail over the past few days and it definitely shows that creativity abounds out there in Blogland.

A few days ago I received this beautiful pin and card from Mary....

Aren't the colors of this pin just beautiful? I'm thrilled to be the proud new owner of this piece of fantastic workmanship....Thank you so much, Mary! And the card has hydrangeas which I always think are so pretty and Spring-like.

Then I received some art from the very talented Zorana....

She put the quote I love on an ATC with the sweetest little "royal" birdie. I love it, Zorana....thank you!

I can't begin to tell each of you how much you all mean to me, and how much I appreciate all the wonderful gifts you have sent my way. Words seem so simple and so plain when compared with my feelings inside. Each gift is received with wonder and surprise and above all else deep appreciation. I think of all the hours that go into creating a piece of art and I'm just thrilled to accept it into my possession.

Please know that each piece of art that has been sent to me has been carefully packed in anticipation of its new home where they will all be on dislpay in my studio. I hope you know how much you all mean to me.

Finding Water in the Desert....oh, and a meme, too!

I live in the high desert thus "Finding Water" can be a bit tricky! It has proved so for me. Sometimes a book chooses me and when I read it, it resonates with me and other times I choose a book and I just don't get it.

"Finding Water" is, I'm sure, a good book and later when I read it again it will be the right time and I'll get it. I didn't choose this book at this time. The interest was all generated by others and I thought it might be fun to read something with a group....but it just doesn't work for me.

I'm sorry to quit in the middle of this but with everything else that's going on in my life right now I can't give it the concentration it deserves. I don't like to quit on anything but I also don't like to do something half-assed!!

Now on to something else. Deb did a little meme from Create a Connection and I thought I'd give it a whirl, too.

1. What was your favorite childhood family vacation? Where did you go and what do you remember most about the trip? (this doesn’t have to be a big trip… even a camping trip - or whatever you remember!)

Mostly when my dad had vacation time we drove from IL to KS to visit my paternal grandparents. As a very small child I have memories of sleeping in the big back window of the car! It had a big "shelf" area that I curled up my parent's would be arrested for child endangerment! One year after visiting grandma and grandpa we drove into CO and went to Colorado Springs for the one and only official vacation we ever took. It was the first time I ever stayed in a motel and I thought it was great. We did all the touristy things....Pike's Peak, Garden of the Gods, Seven Falls, the Royal Gorge, etc. I had never seen mountains until then and I thought you drove straight up the side until you reached the "point" and then you drove straight down again! Little did I know that one day I would live in that very town.

This is me (on the right) and another tourist kid and I think we were at Pike's Peak.

2. If you knew your grandparents, what do you remember most about them as a child? If you didn’t know them, what stories do you remember being told about them?

My grandparents were all very much a part of my life when I was growing up, and I even had one great-grandpa still living....he died when I was about 12 or 13, I think. I have lots of memories and stories about all my grandparents! My dad's dad was a very small man, bald on top with that little fringe of hair around the back, and he smoked a pipe. He always had that pipe in his mouth so much so that he wore away a part of his teeth where he clamped down on it! I always loved the smell of his pipe. He had a gruff manner but always had a twinkle in his eye. My dad's mom was a big woman. Once when we were visiting, she, my mom and I all went to Wichita to go shopping. It was summer and hot and we spent most of the day walking around. Every time Mom and Grandma got hot and stopped for a glass of iced tea I would ask for a chocolate soda. Of course, after one my mom said no but Grandma said "oh why not since it's so hot" and I was in heaven! I had three or four chocolate sodas that day and loved every last drop! My mom's dad taught me to make faces when I was just a toddler. I wrote about that on a previous post. My mom's mom was a tiny, little person. She was always singing hymns in the kitchen. She loved to talk on the phone and every morning she called her friends and chatted for hours. She made doll clothes for my dolls, baked the best ever blackberry cobbler, and grew hollyhocks out behind the garage.

3. Do you have siblings or not? What do you remember about growing up with or without them?

I'm it!! No brothers or sisters. Oddly enough, two of my best friends were also an only child so I didn't think much about it. It was when my mom died that I realized there was no one else except me.

4. What did you like best about summer vacation from school?

Duh! No homework!....and having time to spend with my friends, getting to stay up a little later at night and not having to get up as early in the mornings.

5. Did you like school or dislike school? What is your most memorable school moment?

I liked it and disliked it at the same time. I liked learning but I wasn't good with the social part of it. There were many times when other kids made my life miserable. I don't think I had a memorable moment! Maybe being named editor of my high school newspaper.

Bonus: Post a favorite photo of yourself from your childhood!!

I wouldn't say this is a favorite by any means but it was the first day of school. Not sure what year mom didn't write on her photos! What a fashion plate I am!! I think I went to the "Poodle Hair Salon" for my coif!!

A Challenge From Mary....

A couple of days ago Mary issued a challenge for us to tell a story about how we met our husbands or someone who is important in our lives.

I've told this story before but this time I'll add a couple of photos. So here goes. I was living in Glendale, CA in 1990 having just been divorced from my second husband. My landlady was an 80 year young (!) Cajun woman from Louisiana and she liked to have a good time. She was always inviting me to go across the street to a local Mexican restaurant to have a drink with her but I usually made some excuse. Finally I decided I would accept her invitation and we agreed that on the following Sunday evening I would meet her for a drink.

Molly and I spent the day together and we were having fun but I had to cut it short so I could keep my promise. I hurried home, showered and put on a short black skirt and a tee shirt and walked across the street to meet Inez. The date was June 24, 1990.

Everyone knew Inez so I spent several minutes being introduced to all her friends. We sat at the bar because that was her usual place and I had a glass of wine. I thought that I'd have the one drink then make some excuse and go home.

About halfway through my wine I got up to go to the bathroom and when I returned there was a guy sitting on the stool on the other side of me. I sat down and turned slightly towards Inez but then she got up and went to the bathroom leaving me alone with the guy next to me.

He said something and we began chitty chatting and I didn't even notice when Inez returned! By now you know the guy was HB. We sat and talked for quite awhile. He seemed like a nice guy and he was interesting.

We exchanged phone numbers and he told me not to worry if a woman answered his phone because he had a female roommate!! Alarm bells started going off in my head....I thought he was married and just making up a story. Apparently he knew what I was thinking because he explained that he really did have a roommate and he only rented a room from her. (HB was here in the LA area for a job and he had just rented a place to stay for a few weeks.) She was not interested in him or vice versa.

Long story short, he called me the following Thursday and we met for a drink, then we went for dinner the next night (he freaked out when he learned I was a vegetarian!) It just so happened that my boss had given me free tickets to a Dodger game with very good seats and valet parking so I invited HB to go with me on Saturday. We had a great time.

The next day he took me to Disneyland and from then on it was the two of us together most of the time.

This is a photo of my "bad boy" when I first met him....

Sorry about all the spots on this's ink from another photo.

And here's a couple of me at the same time....

I had just had my hair colored and it was actually kind of a burgundy color. For years it had been blonde but my gal had convinced me to try something new!

I'm sitting on HB's lap but you can just see the edge of him on the right.

When HB left LA to go up to Seattle for his job, I went with him. A couple of years later we bought an RV and began traveling for his job and continued that until 2001. We moved to Colorado in 1993, bought property near Cripple Creek, and on Dec 24, 1994 HB and I were there on our property when he proposed to me....exactly 4 1/2 years to the day from when we met.

On June 24, 1995 we were married in a meadow on that property....this is one of the only photos from that day!!

I wore....what else....purple!! I even had on purple suede boots!! The woman on the left was the minister who married us. We had a ceremony that we designed and it included a touch of Native American poetry.

For almost three years, every 24th of each month HB gave me a card to mark the day we met. So there you have most of the story of how I met my honey. I don't usually go around meeting guys in bars (!!) but he was such a gentleman (must be that Southern upbringing!) that I made an exception. And I'm so glad I did.

Winning, Helping....and a Little Bit of Dancing!!

I got up very early this morning so I could use the computer!! And what a surprise I had in my email. It seems I am the winner of some beautiful jewelry from Kara!! If you don't know about her blog be sure to stop by. She does fantastic work....and she is making a line of jewelry for the Multiple Sclerosis Society using the colors of their ads.

I am happy and excited to know that I will soon be wearing some of Kara's beautiful jewelry.

Then I took a quick peek at a few other blogs....still playing catch up!....and came across something else of interest. I'm sure many of you have already seen this but I'm going to pass it on just in case. AfricanKelli is asking for some help over on her blog. If you can put a few things in a Ziplock bag she will definitely be able to help some children in need. Check it out if you have time.

On another subject, are any of you watching "Dancing With the Stars"....who are your favorites? I was so glad that Clyde was finally eliminated. He seems like a very nice man but he is NOT a dancer! He may glide on the basketball court but he sure didn't glide on the dance floor. It was almost painful for me to watch him. I think they could have paired him with someone a little bit taller, too. That might have helped. Maybe Edyta....she seems to be all legs! I think Apollo and Julianne are perfectly matched and they did a sizzling dance! They're both so cute.

No photos today. HB is up and needing to get busy so I'm off for now.

Golden Neighbors....

HB and I moved into this house just after 9/11. The first (and only) neighbors to introduce themselves are the neighbors to the north side of us...."A" and "T" and their six children. "A" is from Lebanon and "T" is from right here in the USA.

Any time we need help with anything they are always there. Recently "T" and their oldest son made a trip to Lebanon. They returned yesterday and invited HB and I over to the house. "T" had bought me a gift in Lebanon, and to say I was speechless when I saw it is stating it mildly.

This is what she brought back for me.....

....a tea service for 12!!!!....including 12 small spoons.

This is just the most gorgeous set I've ever owned! And "T" was afraid I wouldn't like it!!

She also brought back all kinds of goodies and we sampled several different sweets including my favorite from way back - "A" sent us home with a plateful of sweets.

I can honestly say we have never had better neighbors and will most definitely hate to leave them. "A" is trying, in every way he can, to convince us to stay.

Old Photos Challenge!

A few days ago Vicci challenged us to show photos of ourselves from 20 years ago.

If you knew me, you would know what a real challenge that is!! I am very adept at avoiding cameras....I always have been. I hate having my photo taken and seldom ever like any of them. There are tons of photos of me as a small child but not so many of me as an adult.

In fact, there are entire decades when there are no photos of me....or at the most, one or two. So finding photos from 20 years ago was definitely a challenge!

This afternoon I began digging around and I finally came up with some photos to share. The first one is way more than 20 years ago! This was taken in 1972.

That's me and my kids coming out of The Long Branch Saloon in Dodge City, KS!! Honest, we weren't drinking anything stronger than sasparilla! This is a western town re-created for tourists. I can't imagine why I'm carrying that huge purse with shorts but I am!!

I think the next photo is from 1976....

I was visiting Aunt Dotti in Palm Springs. It was my first trip to California. We were having lunch and when we came out this Rolls Royce was parked out front. She made me stand in front of it for a photo for my friends back home! I told everyone it was Aunt Dotti's car....then I 'fessed up.

I'm not sure what that pose is supposed to be! I look like I'm leaning backwards for some dumb reason....and get a load of the "designer" jeans!! I'm sporting the Dorothy Hamill haircut that was so popular at the time.

These next three photos are from 1988 when I was on a trip to Victoria BC....

Me on a tour bus. It's a little dark but I think you can see me!!

Same day....

Same trip, different day. Don't you love the leggings! And the black shirt looks like a maternity top....believe me, I was NOT pregnant!

This was probably a few years earlier, in of my favorite places on earth! I must be thinking about something very important.

The one thing that's fairly consistent is my hair. The top photo is deceiving because I'm in the shadows but my hair was blond (with a little help) from the time I was 18 years old until about 1990! And in most of the later photos it's short and cut much like it is today.

Many Thanks.....

I have recently received the first ever award for my blog and it came from Daisy! It's the Thinking Blogger award! I am completely flabbergasted by this!! I just don't get awards for anything. Daisy actually awarded this to me several days ago but I haven't had much computer time plus I had to actually think about it for awhile! Thank you, Daisy!

The instructions for receiving this award can be found here.

My nominations are as follows, in no particular order:
ART junk GIRL because Lia is always so inspiring and willing to share her creative "secrets"....her blog is fresh and fun and she makes me think about art in many different ways.

Red Shoe Ramblings. This was one of the first blogs I started reading, one of the first blogs that I got the nerve to comment on, and Deb was the first person to comment on my blog. She has a great sense of humor, is a fantastic photographer, does beautiful quilts, and just always puts a smile on my face and happiness in my heart.

Arty Fartying Around....Sue lives in South Africa, is a photographer, re-habs houses, and does wonderful art. She does the most beautiful "tours" of South Africa with her much so that I feel that I've actually been there! She makes me think about parts of the world that are unfamiliar to me.

Beadlust....Robin is a bead artist among many other talents. Her work is very inspiring and she always encourages me to think about art in new and challenging ways. Robin showcases other bead artists and has written several books on beading. Her blog is always a beautiful place to visit.

Crazy Aunt Purl who will most likely never know she's been nominated!! But hers was another of the first blogs I read....and still read. She always makes me laugh, she has taught me a lot about knitting....and about life! She IS a thinking blogger because she couldn't write the interesting posts that she does if she wasn't thinking!! I love her and I think she has a big heart.

So that's my list of blogs to receive my nomination. Now you may have noticed something else new on my sidebar. Lisa sent out "Bright Light" awards to a lot of blogs and I was one of them! Thank you, Lisa for thinking of me as a bright light. Sometimes I think I'm only about a 25W!!

And my mail box had another surprise for me a couple of days ago. Rowan sent me a delicious package. I say that because when I opened it the most wonderful aroma wafted up from a Verbena sachet....then I found a beautiful, hand stitched (counted cross stitch) coaster!

This scan does not do it justice. The stitches are so tiny and so perfect....and in my most favorite color! Thank you, Rowan. I love it. I have done some counted cross stitch but I cannot imagine working with stitches this small. It is exquisite work.

I have some new photos on my other blog....the link is on the right side of my sidebar.

Finally....A Little Bit of Mojo

Sometimes something just resonates with me and it will spark a little light in my brain. Such has been the case with the SoulCollage cards that Lisa has been making. A few years ago Molly gave me a package of blank SoulCollage cards as part of my Christmas. I knew what they were but just didn't feel any pull to create something with them at that time. So I put them in a drawer and there they stayed until today. After seeing what Lisa was doing I was inspired to get them out and give them a try.

Here's my very first attempt....

And here is my second one....

I'm not fooling myself that these are anything special but they are the first things I've done in quite awhile so I'm happy with them.

Thanks for all your encouragement regarding the house hunt. I am sure the "right" house is out's just very difficult to find it from 2000 miles away!

I wrote the above post yesterday afternoon (when I had a chance to get on the computer!) and then the mail came and it had more goodies! I am beginning to get embarrassed to show you all the wonderful gifts I've been receiving! Mainly because I have nothing to show that's going out to any of these wonderful people!

This time it was a package from Robyn....

In case it doesn't show up on the photo, the doll is made from fabric covered in BEES!! She is just so cute. I love her, Robyn. And the little card has sweet yarn flowers on it....the sea shell is so unique. HB and I both had to thoroughly inspect it because it has such a different look and feel to it from shells we've found here in the US. Now I have a little piece of Australia in our home! Thank you, Robyn!!

Monday Morning Mumblings....

Thanks to everyone for the emails and ecards and all the other Easter messages. HB and I had a quiet day. He worked on some little outside projects and I puttered around in the house. Later I baked a ham for him, did scalloped potatoes, and fresh green beans with chayote, mushrooms, and ginger. I ate the green beans and some tofu!

I did manage to finally do something creative! I drew something in my sketchbook and used colored pencils to finish it. This is for a young girl I know.

I'm sure some of you are wondering about the house we made an offer's a no go again!! We made the offer, they countered, and we countered again. Then we withdrew the offer because finally, after asking numerous times for the disclosure statement, they faxed it to us. Now keep in mind we first asked for it before the offer was made! When we read it our enthusiasm for this house fell away quickly. It stated that the basement got water when it stormed. We were planning to use the basement for more than just a basement!

This is so frustrating because the realtor we were working with could have saved herself a lot of unnecessary time by simply sending us the disclosure statement when we initially requested it. But instead she drove 45 minutes one way to take photos and measurements for us, had her weekend interrupted several times, and ended up losing the deal. AACKKKK!!!

So we're back at square one.

I'll leave you with a little quiz thingie I got from DebR.

You Are 6: The Loyalist

You have strong relationships and are intensely loyal.

People find you easy to love and care for.

You like your world to be stable and secure, no surprises.

You're cautious. You prefer your inner circle to the outside world.

More Mail and Another Offer....

I had more exciting mail yesterday! This time it was a package from Gemma!! I love her artwork and had commented on a 4 X 4 she did....and she sent it to me!

This is called "Midnight Confessions of a Comeback Diva"

Plus Gemma also made a 6 X 6 for me....

This one has fabric and paper....and glitter!! I love the picture on this one. Thanks Gemma!

There were several comments about how neat my junk drawer looked! I have to confess it's mostly HB's junk. I mostly have things in stacks all over the house!! My studio is crammed full so now I'm putting things in discreet corners! Mostly books. I can't resist them. There should be a "BA" organization for Book-aholics Anonymous! I'd be one of their star members.

The house search goes on. We made another offer but since it's Easter weekend it might not be presented until next week. I'll keep you posted. Right now I feel as if I'm in limbo.

I hope you all have a fantastic Easter weekend!!

The Truth About My Housekeeping....

You know how I love a good meme!! I haven't done one for quite awhile but I saw one over at Dee's blog and couldn't resist!

aprons - y/n? I wore them when I was younger but not anymore.

baking - y/n? I like to bake but since HB and I are both watching what we eat I haven't been doing any lately. He didn't even want a cake on his birthday!! I usually make him a pineapple upside down cake on his birthday.

clothesline - y/n? I wish! I love sheets dried on a clothesline. Hopefully when we move I'll be able to have one.

donuts - ever made them?- Way back when my kids were little I used to make "donuts" using canned biscuits! I just poked a hole in the middle, kind of spread it out a little, then deep-fried them and rolled them in sugar and cinnamon. They were very yummy but would "kill" me now!

everyday - one homemaking thing you do everyday? Dishes

freezer - do you have a separate deep freezer? - We have a small freezer in the garage.

garbage disposal - y/n- Yes but I don't use it much.

handbook - y/n?- I have several old homemaking books that I have collected but I don't follow one. I'm definitely not Martha!!

ironing - love it or hate it?- I don't mind ironing if I don't have to do it.

junk drawer - where is it? In a cabinet in the garage.

Isn't this exciting?? You get to see my junk drawer!!

kitchen - design and decorating? Right now it's boring because we're un-personalizing the house but I usually like homey, comfortable things. I like things stored in big jars, and I love cast iron cookware, so I guess more of a country feeling. I don't like ulta-modern, sleek, shiny.

love - what is your favorite part of homemaking?- Are you kidding me?? I don't think there's any part of homemaking that I love! I'm just not a very domestic person. I do it because I have to but I sure don't love it!

mop - y/n? Do you mean do I own one?? Yes. Do I like to use it....No!!

nylons - wash them by hand or in the washer? I don't wear nylons. I will wear pantyhose if it's a special occasion and I wash them by hand.

oven - do you use the window or open it to check? Both.

pizza - what do you put on yours? I don't eat pizza anymore but I used to like a good veggie pizza.

quiet - what do you do during the day when you get a quiet moment? Read, make art, visit blogs, daydream!

recipe card box - I have my mom's handwritten recipe book and one I started many years ago. I also have a recipe box full of recipes that I bought at a yard sale.

style of house- I'm not sure....I've heard it called a "snout" house I think because the garage is out in front. It's two stories, stucco, has a tile I guess it might be Mediterranean but not really!

What would you call it?

tablecloths and napkins - y/n? - You must be joking! I use paper towels most of the time and tell people they're family heirlooms.

under the kitchen sink - The trash can, dishwasher soap and other cleaning supplies.

vacuum - how many times a week? HB usually does the vacuuming.

wash - how many loads do you do a week? I guess about 3 loads a week.

x’es - do you keep a list of things to do and cross them off? Sometimes but not always. You had me scared at first....I thought you wanted me to list all my x-husbands!!

yard - who does what? We have a gardener who does most of it. I sometimes pull some weeds or snip off dead blossoms but since I don't have much luck growing anything here, there isn't much for me to do in the yard.

zzz’s - what is your last homemaking task for the day? Start the dishwasher, make sure all the doors and windows are closed and locked, turn out the lights. Nightie night!

Moving, Mail and The Moon....

As usual, things piled up on me and I didn't get to do much on the computer over the past few days. Thank you for all your emails and concern. I sure hope we're able to find a place soon so some of this whirlwind around us will settle down!

We actually thought (once again) that we had found a place but then when we received the disclosure information, the house sits on a flood plain and flooded in 1994!! So that one is out. I don't want to "find water" that way!! So the search continues. Many of you have asked....we are trying to find a place in TN or possibly KY. HB likes TN better because of taxes so that's where he's been concentrating lately. He would like something over towards the eastern 1/3 of the state but has looked in other parts, too.

Each time we find something, we either get beat out by someone who lives right there and can drive out to see the house, or we have our offer rejected....most likely because we have to put a contingency in the contract that we have a personal inspection of the house. That means we have to give ourselves time to actually get there and many people don't want to wait for that. It's frustrating!! If anyone has any advice on making a long-distance move like this please let me know. I can take all the advice I can get at this time!

Now on to a different subject. Mail!! I am getting completely overwhelmed by the generosity of each and every one of you out there in Blogland! I'm continually surprised when I go to the mailbox. The past few days are no exception.

Several days ago I got a package from Dotee with lots of collage goodies and this ATC....

Thank you, Dotee....I love it. You always send such fun things that always put a smile on my face.

Then yesterday HB brought in the mail and I was stunned. This is what I received from Lila!!

I opened the package and sat there with my mouth hanging open. HB finally had to tell me there was something else in the package!! She also sent me an ATC and a 4 X 4 card....

I love the watercolor backgrounds she uses. And words cannot come close to describing this Moon Goddess doll. The time it took to make the handknit sweater with all the beads....I love her hair!!....and the deep blue sparkly fabric for her's all just gorgeous. I actually sat on the couch for about an hour just holding her in my hands. Thank you sooooo much, Lila!

And here I sit like a bump on a log, not doing anything creative! I keep piddling in the studio....gessoing pages in my journal and doing backgrounds but nothing of any seriousness. I think my mind is just too jumbled up with all the moving stuff and I can't settle down to anything.

On a last note, I posted some new photos on my other blog....nothing spectacular....just some pics of the apple trees in blossom. Everything is so pretty right now.

I almost forgot to tell you!! This site is giving away free posters if you pay shipping and handling only. They have many to choose from and they're inspirational in theme. Check it out.
