Old Photos Challenge!

A few days ago Vicci challenged us to show photos of ourselves from 20 years ago.

If you knew me, you would know what a real challenge that is!! I am very adept at avoiding cameras....I always have been. I hate having my photo taken and seldom ever like any of them. There are tons of photos of me as a small child but not so many of me as an adult.

In fact, there are entire decades when there are no photos of me....or at the most, one or two. So finding photos from 20 years ago was definitely a challenge!

This afternoon I began digging around and I finally came up with some photos to share. The first one is way more than 20 years ago! This was taken in 1972.

That's me and my kids coming out of The Long Branch Saloon in Dodge City, KS!! Honest, we weren't drinking anything stronger than sasparilla! This is a western town re-created for tourists. I can't imagine why I'm carrying that huge purse with shorts but I am!!

I think the next photo is from 1976....

I was visiting Aunt Dotti in Palm Springs. It was my first trip to California. We were having lunch and when we came out this Rolls Royce was parked out front. She made me stand in front of it for a photo for my friends back home! I told everyone it was Aunt Dotti's car....then I 'fessed up.

I'm not sure what that pose is supposed to be! I look like I'm leaning backwards for some dumb reason....and get a load of the "designer" jeans!! I'm sporting the Dorothy Hamill haircut that was so popular at the time.

These next three photos are from 1988 when I was on a trip to Victoria BC....

Me on a tour bus. It's a little dark but I think you can see me!!

Same day....

Same trip, different day. Don't you love the leggings! And the black shirt looks like a maternity top....believe me, I was NOT pregnant!

This was probably a few years earlier, in Yosemite....one of my favorite places on earth! I must be thinking about something very important.

The one thing that's fairly consistent is my hair. The top photo is deceiving because I'm in the shadows but my hair was blond (with a little help) from the time I was 18 years old until about 1990! And in most of the later photos it's short and cut much like it is today.

  1. What wonderful photos. You shouldn't be shy about having your picture taken. Although, I understand it. You have nothing to hide.
That's easy for me to say about someone else but if it's a picture of me...it's another story. LOLOLOL ;)
    Thanks for sharing!

  2. I just love these! I’m posting mine tomorrow they’re all ready to go! That must have been Beacon Hill Park or Butchart gardens in Victoria….we went there a lot when we were young! Haven’t been there for ages! You look adorable in those tights with the black top….that style is back too! History does repeat! Loved the photos. So much fun!

  4. Hey, that leggings-and-oversized top thing was VERY stylin' in the '80's! I wore a lot of that kind of thing too. :-)

It was fun seeing these pics!

  5. Look at you, those are fabulous photos!!! (hot mama!)
I can so relate to the not wanting your picture taken and having more from when you were little, there are very few of me over the years as I was always saying "please don't take my photo"..and the ones that were I NEVER like. Sadly there aren't very many of G and I either due to me..sad really. Oh well, we are our own worst critics! I happen to think you look great!!!
    Love,
    Lisa

And you still look good too.

  7. That was fun! Isn't it funny how those styles were so prevalent? The Dorothy Hamill hair, the leggings. I wonder if people will look back 20 years from now and see patterns like that? I am so out of the fashion loop that I don't know if there is one. LOL

You looked great in all the pics as you do in your current pics.

  9. I love the foto of you in Yosemite. You are just blending into the beauty that is. You look so at peace. I love Yosemite too, especially when you wander away from the roads and people and just be alone and look up.

I see you started spiking your hair up early too. Did you see my foto like that. We were trend setters for sure. Thanks for sharing Janet.

  13. I love the old photo challenge and have to thank Vicki for posting the challenge. I think they are fun. You were a lovely young person and now you're a lovely older than you were then person. Not to shabby. I have the same reaction to a camera.

  14. Great old photos Janet!!! They are great. Yosemite must be beautiful!
I remember the Dorothy Hamill haircut well, my mother sported it for awhile! The boys at school used to say "YOur mom is soooo pretty!" And so were/are you, Janet!

  16. Lovely to see you, Janet - you look great!
This has been fun, seeing how everyone looked, 'back in the day' - and seeing a lot of similarities. I had a "Dorothy Hamill" around '77 or so, too...and went through the
'leggings with baggy top' look, too - you look way better in them than I remember how I looked in them.
    Thanks for sharing the fun!

  17. Since the day has not really started here, I had a few moments to see what is going on, glad I did, I missed most of these years of you since I was in Fl. and you were, (all over the place) LOL! This is something I might have time to do. BE BLESSED :-)

  18. I love these Janet..!
You look so good in all of them.
I think we all have a mental picture of ourselves and it never translates on photo.
I have avoided the camera in the last few years too.
The Yosemite one, you appear to be at one with your surroundings, I think that is my favourite.

  19. Thanks for sharing the photos> I really like the one of you beside the water. I remember the leggings too....leggings are "back" now (for the younger gals), footless this time and worn under short dresses with ballet-type flats.

  20. I love seeing old photographs, the one of you at Yosemite is lovely. I think Sheila is right - what appears on photographs is not quite the vision we have of ourselves in our minds. My mental vision of me is about 20 years younger and 20 pounds lighter so photographs come as something of a shock:)
