A Day at the Festival

Yesterday was a gorgeous day....temps around 75ยบ, sunny and warm with a cool breeze. It was the perfect day for the festival. This was our first time at this one and I can say with confidence it won't be my last! This was far superior to the Fall Festival that Palmdale has each year! That one has become an importer's showcase!

We arrived at St. Andrew's Abbey Fall Festival, near Pearblossom, at about noon. It was a pleasant drive through some beautiful high desert scenery. Everything about this festival was well organized and enjoyable. They even provided free shuttle buses to take you from the parking area to the festival!!

The grounds were so pretty and I wish I had more, and better, photos for you but I was just so caught up in everything that I usually forgot to take photos! Here are a few overall views of the crafter's area....

It was well laid out with plenty of room to walk and to view booths. And the things we saw seemed to be handmade items. My favorite purchase of the day was from a wonderful woman who makes the most gorgeous clothes and hats. I bought this jacket....(the turquoise tee-shirt is just to show the jacket better)

I wish you could see it in person....and feel it!! The material is as soft as a cloud and drapes so beautifully. I was in heaven looking through her booth. I first tried on a full-length jacket/coat that was to die for but I'm just not tall enough to pull that off. It was beautiful though. And she was a delight. Her name is Dale Tabrizi....Tabrizi Designs....and if you ever see her booth at a festival be sure to take a look. I guarantee you won't be disappointed!

HB and I had lunch at an outdoor cafe on the grounds. Very good food, terrific atmosphere with a bubbling fountain nearby and soft music in the background....the perfect setting for a leisurly meal.

After lunch we walked to the Artists' Alley where they were having a raffle for this quilt....

It was difficult to get a good photo because it was pretty much in the shade. The hand work on this was gorgeous.

But my big downfall came as we were leaving! They had a huge used book area. When I asked what the prices were they told me it was all just a donation....whatever you wanted to give! By late afternoon when we were there it was fairly picked over but I managed to find some interesting things to use in art. And if you're reading this, Pam, I got an old book from 1960 with photos of Paris!! I thought of you immediately!!

All in all it was a great day for a great festival and we had a wonderful time. Here is an over-all map of the festival.

This is clickable if you want to see all the map.

And then here's my art for the day....another doodle!

Happy Birthday to my cousin, Mary Anne....and to Gemma!! Hope you both have a fantastic day.

A Doodle For Today....

HB and I are going to a craft festival today so hopefully I'll have some photos to show you later. For now, here's my doodle for the day....

I'm doing pretty good about drawing something every day. Some days I don't post a drawing if I have other things but I do try to draw at least a doodle each day. I'm getting back into the groove of creating art. It was a loooooong dry spell and hopefully now I'll continue on with it.

By, Jove! I Think She's Got It!!....maybe

Yesterday you could probably tell that I was a bit frustrated with ART!! So I got out of the house and went to my favorite place....where else....the bookstore!! You know I need more BOOKS!!

Now don't faint, but I bought one. Yes, just one! I'm so glad I did and I want to recommend this book to anyone who wants to create an art journal.

I've only read about halfway through this book and already I'm feeling better about things.....well, that and a bit of encouragement and advice from someone special. You know who you are!

This morning I sat down and created this page. The thought came to me last night as I was falling asleep. I didn't do it as I saw it but kind of put my own spin on it this morning. I think I might be getting it!

This is clickable if you want to see it larger.

I also began working a bit more on the other pages I did earlier. I have some ideas of things to add to these....(thank you, special person!)

A Little Bit of Art (?)

After spending a lot of time just sitting and looking at it I finally began scribbling/painting in my journal. Here's my latest pages. Can you tell I'm getting frustrated?? But I'm NOT giving up!

Maybe I should just stick to drawing!! Here's one for today.

I may color it in later but for now it's just an ink drawing.

A Truly Wonderful Day....

Well, I had quite a day yesterday! My feet are killing me from all that dancing and I admit to having a bit too much champagne, too!! But I had a wonderful time at the ball and loved seeing everyone's dresses. I had so many new visitors and I'll take this opportunity to say thanks because I know I won't get around today to thank each and every one of you individually! This was all due to the Bloglandia Ball. A big Thank You goes out to eb for hosting the best party ever!

Then I had the best, most wonderful thing happen to me. I'm not going to tell you what it was! You'll have to go visit Kai's blog and see for yourself! Go ahead. I'll wait.

Ok, have you been? Wasn't that the most incredible thing to have happen to me? I was just stunned! Kai is the sweetest, most inspiring person ever and I think she did a fantastic job of capturing me in her drawing. And it was her 500th post, too!! I think "K" is for kindness and that means Kai!

I'll be back later with some drawings.

I'm Ready for the Ball....

Today is the Bloglandia Ball! I'm ready to get dressed up in my finest and dance the night away. As usual, I had trouble deciding what to wear....and I had to mix "business" (drawing something every day) with pleasure so here is the dress I originally planned to wear....

It's still my favorite but just in case the weather turns chilly I also have this to wear....

It's a bit breezy and I'm having to hold on to the leaves on my head piece! See you at the party!!

Thank you, Lia!!!!

If you've been reading my blog for any length of time you probably already know that I have an interest in art journals....but it's just been an interest!! I haven't actually started keeping one.

I painted some pages a few months ago and then had problems getting something to write on them. But I still look at art journals online and wish I knew the "secret" to making them.

Well, I might just have found it! A few days ago Lia had a link to some tutorials on YouTube....I went, I watched, I got inspired!! I bought some oil pastels, although not the kind recommended because they weren't available in any of our stores here, and I wanted to get busy right away. The ones I got work ok but I'll order the others online.

I actually smudged and squished and pushed and pulled the colors over the pages. I tried to be loose and free (didn't happen!) with it and hopefully if I keep trying it will happen. Here's the first couple of pages I did. They aren't great but at least I gave it a shot....

The picture is a little darker than it is in real life but when I tried to lighten it, it lost some of the detail so I just left it dark.

You can't really read what it says "Fall is my favorite time of year" on one side and "falling leaves" on the other.

While visiting Maryellen's blog I noticed a quiz thingie on her sidebar and I couldn't resist!!

You Were a Whale

You see the unseen and connect on the deepest level.
You help others find their soul's song.

I'll post some drawings later today or tomorrow. I have been drawing, just not putting them on for some reason.

Drawing again....

My drawing something every day kinda took a back seat to everything else over the past few days but yesterday I managed a quick sketch. HB was sitting with his feet up on the hassock/coffee table and I noticed the bottom of his sneakers.

Here's what I came up with....

The scanner made that dark shadow at the top. The paper was just a little too big to fit on the scanner bed!

You may have noticed I've changed the name and added a banner on my blog!! What do you think??

Birthday Follow-up

So far I've had 64 birthdays but I think the one I had yesterday was one of the best! Even though I wasn't feeling all that great I managed to have a wonderful day.

First of all, Gail, my oldest and dearest friend called she had sent me the most fantastic presents....more about that later. Then my son called from Alaska! That was a huge surprise. Later my daughter called and then last evening I had a most wonderful surprise call from none other than Pirk who lives in Canada!!

I had lots of messages, emails, ecards, and such from everyone. Thank you all for making this a really fantastic day.

Gail sent me a package that arrived several days ago but I waited until yesterday to open it. Here's what she sent....

The purple beads in the necklace and earrings are made from paper. The tiny teapot is polymer clay and it's adorable. And I love the cup pincushion. All these items were packaged so perfectly in purple boxes and felt bags. Does she know me, or what? As if that weren't enough she also put something on her blog yesterday that she made for me. Please go have a peek won't be sorry!!

The ever-inspiring Kai sent me a package....and I waited to open it, too! Here's what Kai sent....

The angel is so beautiful in person....this photo doesn't do it justice. And one of Kai's wonderful ATCs that reads "forever for always without end"

Judie had me ROFL when I opened her card (more later) and she also included this wonderful drawing....

She is Janetta Goddess of the Bees!! I LOVE her!!

Here is a collage of some of my cards....

Two of these cards had me almost choking I was laughing so hard! As I mentioned, Judie's is the one in the lower right hand corner. It reads "Your birthday is the perfect time to offer you the traditional Hawaiian wish....may your coconuts never hang lower than your grass skirt." I think that ship has passed!!

The other one that had me laughing was from my cousin, Mary's the one in the upper left hand corner. It reads "Happy Birthday! In Europe they believe a woman becomes more exciting after the age of 35....let's move!!" I'm ready when you are!

I had a beautiful card from's the one with all my favorite lilies. I love all my cards and gifts and appreciate all the phone calls and messages I received. Thank you all for making my 64th birthday so special.

International Day of Peace....

Today is the International Day of Peace!! You can read about it here.

Sixty four years ago today I was born and the world was not at peace. Now all these years later we still aren't at peace! When are we going to learn?

I think it's rather cool that my birthday is such a significant day and such a worthwhile one at that. It helps me focus on what is important, and at the top of my list would be PEACE!! I hope I live to see it in my lifetime....but it doesn't look good.

I wrote the upper part of this several days ago thinking I could finish it last night. I had big plans for putting music on my blog...."When I'm Sixty Four" (!!) and all kinds of other things but life got in the way!

Yesterday evening I wasn't feeling good and spent the whole time in bed! Nothing serious....just my tummy acting up but this morning I feel as if I've been in a fight and the other guy won! So please forgive me for leaving this in such a half-finished way.

I plan to be quiet today and eat soothing food and take care of me so I can celebrate many more birthdays.

A Little Bit of Catch-up....

Thank you everyone who commented yesterday. I'm feeling much better and my back is fine....just has a huge scrape but HB played doctor and put antiseptic and a bandage on it. So I'm good to go.

Just in case you thought I forgot, I'm still working out the kinks on trying to put some books on my blog. I've also contacted a couple of places to see if I can donate some of them. I'm sure you think I have a few boxes of books in the garage....this is what you see when you step from the house into the garage....

That is the small, one-car side of the garage! Now this is the larger two-car side....

All those boxes are full of books!! Now do you see my dilemma?!! That was where I was chasing the cat when I fell. Luckily for me none of those boxes toppled over on me! I'd probably still be buried out there if that had happened!

Since I'm playing catch up today....something else I haven't forgotten is the baby blanket I'm crocheting. I have the center of the blanket finished and I've been working on the outer chains that go around the perimeter. You can see what it will look like here. And this is a picture of the chains so far....

I think I have 71 finished and I need 112 so I'm not too far away from the end!!

And lastly here's my drawing for the day. While looking through some old journals I came across this beginning drawing that I started about a year ago.

And here it is after I finished it....

You can't tell but the stars are silver and the moon is gold. Also there is some shading on the lower part of the picture that isn't showing up. In fact her hood isn't coming out in the right colors either. So use your imagination!! She isn't one of my best efforts.

Shiver Me Timbers!!

Ahoy! Well, me mateys here it is International Talk Like a Pirate Day and I would be remiss if I didn't have some mention of my all-time favorite pirate Capt. Jack Sparrow AKA Johnny Depp.

Actually I'll use any excuse to look at him!

Now HE could carry me off any day and I wouldn't put up a fight!!

Now on to other things. I had a rough day yesterday so no drawing and not much else. First off I felt queasy most of the day and then in the afternoon I fell in the garage while trying to chase down one of the cats....Harley to be specific! I stumbled (long story! If you saw our garage you'd understand!) and fell backwards hitting my back on a metal sawhorse. Luckily my butt landed in a cardboard box (I'm sure that was a funny picture!) and I have a nice big scrape on my back. Sorry about all this but I'm just not feeling very perky today either. It's time for me to weigh anchor! I'm off to pillage the fridge and see what falls out o' the bung hole! Be sure to read the definitions for that last one!!! It isn't as bad as it sounds!

She Was a Gypsy Fairy....

This isn't exactly a drawing and it isn't new....I've been working on this for quite some time and I'm still not happy with it but here she is anyway! I added a bit to her today.

I think the photo is clickable if you want to see it larger.

It isn't really in the frame. I just laid it on top of the frame to get an idea of how it looked. This is bigger than I usually work. I think this is about a 16 X 20 canvas. And this time her left hand is completely obscured by her hair! It makes her look a bit lop-sided.

May the Blue Bird of Paradise....

Not much time again but here's another quick sketch....

A line in a book I'm reading (Dust Tracks on a Road by Zora Neale Hurston) was the inspiration for this drawing.

My Lady of the Seaweed!!

Once again I don't have much time but here's my latest drawing as promised....

Now you know why my ladies always have their hands behind their back!! I've never been able to draw hands!!

It's Getting a Little Blurry....

While I was browsing through blogland a couple of days ago, I came across a link to some amazing paintings. I apologize for not remembering where I saw this but at the time I was a bit fuzzy-headed! You see I had to get up at 3:30 AM yesterday....long story, don't ask!! So I was browsing the blogs because once I'm awake I can't go back to bed. These paintings are just gorgeous so please go here and have a look.

And I also forgot to post my drawing for yesterday so here it is:

Gypsy fortune tellers, even the weird mechanical ones at fairs, have always fascinated me. I love the romantic idea of gypsies. They always seem so mystical and exotic. And I picture them gazing into a crystal ball saying "It's getting a little blurry" while holding out their hand for more cash! My fortune teller is a novice so she has those swirly antenna to help her tap into the Universe!! Hey, I had to have swirls someplace!!

I'll tell you more about the book idea as I figure out all the details.

A Question for Everyone....

Many of you know that I used to have an online bookstore. I still have quite a lot of books in my garage and while sorting through some of them today (I was looking for children's books to donate to our women's shelter) I had an idea. I don't want to sell online again but I also don't want to just toss these in the dumpster. Is there any interest in my putting a few books on my blog from time to time and if you want them I'll just ask for the mailing costs plus one dollar for hardcovers and 50 cents for softcovers. That would help with the cost of packaging, and the books would find a new home.

Many of these books are not mainstream and I have lots of subject matter to choose from but I have nothing inventoried anymore so please don't ask me about specific books! I have everything from cookbooks to poetry and much in between. Fiction and non-fiction....and I will tell you if the book has any defects such as underlining or highlighting. Most of the books are in good to very good condition. The photo above is not what my books look like!

I hate to see perfectly good books go to waste if someone can use them. I could set this up as part of my sidebar. I look forward to your comments. Be honest. This is just a spur-of-the-moment idea.

And remember that books can also be used to alter or they can be used for their pictures or illustrations.

Designing Woman....

When I was a young girl I loved to design and draw clothes for paper dolls. My best friend Gail and I would spend hours drawing dresses and fancy gowns. We had big plans to be designers when we grew up. Then "life" happened!! Neither one of us became a designer. I wish I could tell you I still have stacks of those drawings but I don't. Somehow through the years they were discarded.

We used catalogs from Frederick's of Hollywood for inspiration and for the forms of our dolls. That was back in the days when the catalog was completely actual photographs of models were used. It was all drawings and very seductive poses and exaggerated bodies! We loved it!!

Maybe that's why I still draw dresses. I've never been able to sew anything more than a straight seam but I love to design and draw exotic dresses and flowing gowns. Here's my latest drawing....

Actually just a quick color on this one. How odd that I love to draw evening gowns but in real life I spend my time in jeans and a tee shirt! If it's not comfortable I don't wear it!

Madame Butterfly

Nothing much to write about but here is my drawing from 09/09....I drew it yesterday but colored it in today....

I'm not completely happy with this one but I'm posting it anyway.

Sunday Morning....

HB and I have a Sunday morning ritual of having waffles on the patio. These are not the frozen kind either! I make waffles (with the help of a mix) in my George Forman grill....the one HB gave me last Christmas. It has removeable plates that allow me to grill or make waffles or bake. I love it!!

Image from the internet.

Anyway, as we sat outside enjoying the beautiful weather we were serenaded by hundreds of birds. The next door neighbors have a huge cottonwood tree in the back corner of their yard and it backs up to our corner so we have the benefit of lots of shade....and the birds. They were singing and chattering and HB and I decided they were discussing their travel plans.

HB and I went from discussing the birds to discussing ant farms to dorm room decor (?) and then to buying a car. You can't say we're stuck on one subject! We enjoy our quiet Sunday mornings together. And HB has been car shopping. My little Honda is getting old and decrepit and needs to retire. She has over 170,000 miles on her! I like to get my money's worth!

Now here's my drawing I did yesterday. It isn't much but at least I did some drawing. I think that's the point of this whole thing.

My First Drawing....Is It Morning Yet??

I couldn't resist another one of these quiz thingies....

You Are Sunrise

You enjoy living a slow, fulfilling life. You enjoy living every moment, no matter how ordinary.
You are a person of reflection and meditation. You start and end every day by looking inward.
Caring and giving, you enjoy making people happy. You're often cooking for friends or buying them gifts.
All in all, you know how to love life for what it is - not for how it should be.

This might almost be true if not for the part about cooking for my friends!! I most likely wouldn't have any friends if I cooked for them! HB keeps telling me the smoke detector is NOT a timer!!

I do tend to be a morning person....I know....many of you would like to throttle the likes of me! But I've always enjoyed getting up early and getting things done because I'm absolutely useless in the afternoon. I have very low energy and just can't get myself going from about 2:30 or 3:00 until about 7:00 PM....maybe because that's the time most people are thinking about what they'll fix for dinner, and then they're actually cooking. I would love it if dinner (or supper....whatever you call the evening meal) just quit happening!

Mornings are wonderful. And I'm a chatterbox in the morning....much to HB's chagrin. He's a different kind of morning person....the quiet kind. We are so opposite in most ways that it's amazing we ever met! The strange thing is that as much as I love mornings I also love to stay up late at night.

Tonight I began my Draw Something Every Day (DSED) challenge. I couldn't find my pencils so I used micron pens. And it isn't anything different....just another one of my ladies....

EDITED: I colored my drawing this morning (Sat.) and so I'm adding it here now....

Drawing (the kind with a pencil) and Another Award!

Oh....Oh....Oh!!!! I've just done it again!

Remember last November when I joined a challenge to do art every day? Well, now I've decided to join this group. Am I crazy?? It begins September 17th and runs through the end of May. Would you like to join, too? This sounds like fun and it might just get me started again. I'm such a sporadic person when it comes to art. I do something for awhile until I get tired of it and then I move on to something else. Do you do the same thing?

This is how bad I've been lately. My oldest and dearest friend, Gail, had a birthday on August 9th....did she receive a gift from me? NO!! I'm still working on it! It was almost completed and then I ruined it (and I do mean I ruined it!!) and had to start over again. This was not a quick project and I thought I could rush it along but that hasn't been the case. So that's how bad it's been for me and my attempts at creating lately. So hopefully all this will come together and get me started and I'll be cranking out art again. And the gift will get finished!!

I've been given another award! Windy Angels just gave me this:

Thank you so much!! My sidebar is getting so filled with awards that I'm almost embarrassed! I'm making this available to everyone on my blog list. I hate to leave anyone out so consider yourself awarded and feel free to take the image.

My Home and My Soul....

We had a fairly quiet holiday weekend....and we actually got some RAIN on Sunday!! That was a very nice surprise. But it came with lots of thunder and lightening so the computer was off quite a lot.

I managed to finish a couple of scarves for my Love Reaches Out project. You can see them here along with a WIP.

The house if officially off the market as of a couple of days ago and I feel as if I can breathe again! We will most likely try again at a later date but for now it's finished. I'm a little disappointed but also relieved. We want to move and have a quieter lifestyle but maybe this isn't the right time for that. Things always happen for a reason and I'm ok with staying here for now. I'm sure when we do move it will be the right time and the right place.

Since you know I love quiz thingies here's another one for you. This one came out just right for me!!! I got it from Debbi.

What color is your soul painted?

Your soul is painted the color purple, which embodies the characteristics of sensuality, spirituality, creativity, wealth, royalty, nobility, mystery, enlightenment, arrogance, gaudiness, mourning, confusion, pride, delicacy, power, meditation, religion, and ambition. Purple falls under the element of Earth, and was once a European symbol of royalty; today it symbolizes the divine.

How divine is that?? (I'm not sure why it's cutting off the edge....!!)

Kay's My Name....Meme's My Game

It's another meme!! But this one will be very short (so I added some pictures!) I was tagged by Kara to do this one.

You're supposed to list something about yourself for each letter of your middle name. Easy peasy for middle name is Kay....only three letters!!

K - Kind....that's what I try to be. And I believe in Karma.

A - I really don't like anything that's asinine!!

Y - Yin and yang....I can usually see both sides of anything.

Maybe that's all the Libra I have in my astrology chart!

And I also love yogurt!! It has nothing to do with yin and yang but I like it and it starts with "y".

That's it! Only three letters. Now what's your middle name?? If you want to do this meme go right ahead but be sure to let me know so I can come read your answers.

What a nice surprise I had from Denise who sent me these two awards for my blog (she sent them out to several people)....

The first one is the creative blogger award:

And the second one is:

Thanks Denise!! I appreciate these two awards and I love that you send them out to everyone. That way no one feels left out.

In case you read my power company post, I survived! The power was only out from about noon until 4 PM but that was long enough!! The kitties did just fine, too. We're happy to have the a/c back though.
