Just About Over....

On this, the last day of the year, I want to take the opportunity to say thank you to all who visit here....whether it's your first time or you're a regular, your visit is important to me. I try to be a gracious hostess and make you feel comfortable and I can only hope I succeed.

Many times through the year I got discouraged and down about my art but somehow you always boosted me back up again and sent me right back to the studio to try again. I know that without all your support and encouragement I would not be creating as much as I have.

Some days I had absolutely NOTHING to write about (I live a very exciting life!!) and I just sort of rambled on about something silly....but you still visited me and you left me comments and showed me that you're there with me. I can't begin to tell you how much that means to me!

I don't want to get all gushy and gooey here but I do want to let you all know that never, not for one second, have I ever taken any of you for granted. I'm always surprised at the number of comments I receive and very thankful for each one. It's very exciting to open my email and find comments to read. I know that there were many times when I didn't respond back to you....mostly during the hot, icky months of summer and then after my son arrived....but I'm getting better at it. I'm not a very good time manager!!

So when all is said and done, I consider myself pretty darned lucky to have all of you in my life. I look forward to another year of making new friends, learning more about my old friends, and just generally enjoying each other's company. I hope you all have a safe and HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! Thank you for being part of my life....

Joining In....

You may have noticed some new buttons on the sidebar. I've joined a couple of groups for this coming year. The first one is Creative Every Day 2009....this will be my third year of doing this and I'm hoping that this will be the year when I actually accomplish doing something creative every single day. But if I don't I still won't give up.

The other thing I joined is a book club where we will be reading "12 Secrets of Highly Creative People"....HB gave me the book for Christmas so I think that's a good sign that I should join this group. I've already started reading it and I'm sure I'll enjoy it. If you'd like to have more information about this group you can find it here.

I also have been doing some thinking about what I want to do in this coming year. I visited Serena's blog and she inspired me to choose a word that will exemplify my goals for the year. I went to the list and one word just jumped out at me....that word was "growth"....so I'm going to concentrate on growing this year. Growing in my art as well as growing in my thinking.

So I've got some plans for 2009 and I'm looking forward to discovering lots of new things....I never want to stop learning and doing.

Whewww!!

The big day has come and gone and it was wonderful....we missed Molly and we were sad that she couldn't be here with us but we called her several times and talked to her. We plan to have a mini-Christmas when she's able to get down here.

Santa must not have been paying close attention to me last year because he missed all those naughty things I did....he spoiled me rotten with gifts and I truly don't think I was that good!

I have so many new "toys" that I'm not sure which one to play with first! Besides my new laptop HB also gave me a new camera. He talked with a couple of our "techie" relatives and they gave him some suggestions. I love the one they recommended. It's a Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5....it looks like this....

So far I've only taken a few photos but it's very easy to use and I love the fact that it's got auto settings or I can manually set them. I doubt I'll ever use the manual ones! I don't have the software installed on the computer yet but as soon as I do you can expect photos again!

I won't bore you with all my gifts. Just assume that I got way more than I deserved and I'm happy, happy, happy!!

HB also always buys us something as a gift we can both enjoy. This year it's a new Sony Blu-ray DVD player. And this, after I bought him some new movies on regular DVD! Oh, well, they will still play on it, they just won't be in blu-ray.

So we're all set now. I hope everyone else had a great Christmas too. HB left Friday morning for Michigan to visit his son and his family....three granddaughters ages 10, 13, and 16! He's going to have a blast!! HB needs some time off after all those long hours and more to come in the new year.

I hope you didn't eat too many cookies and other goodies over the holidays. I somehow managed to actually lose some weight! Now it's on to the New Year and more fun and art. Let's make 2009 a great year!

Christmas Eve Morning....

Here it is the morning of Christmas Eve and I'm doing good. My wrist is ok and I'm able to use it a bit so I'm coming here to thank all of you for your well wishes. And I'd also like to take a moment to thank you for continuing to visit my blog, to brighten my day with your comments, and for all the beautiful Christmas cards I've received. I know I haven't thanked you individually but I hope you'll forgive me. I have all my cards sitting out where I can see them....first on the mantle but that was soon too small so now they are on a table and that's almost too small for all of them!

This past year has not been one of my best as far as accomplishing things and I plan to do much better in 2009. I want to branch out and do more art using new techniques....to challenge myself more this year. I tend to stay in my "safe" zone when it comes to art....I do what's familiar and sometimes that gets boring!

Now back to Christmas!! This one isn't turning out as I planned. My son made it here from Alaska but my daughter who lives right here in California isn't going to make it! She lives in the mountains and they've had snow recently....enough that her truck is buried in a snow drift! Plus the roads are snowy and slick and I don't like her to drive those twisty, winding roads when it's snowy. We are expecting more snow in those mountains today so she will be spending Christmas alone! The best laid plans.....

I haven't had many pictures to show you lately since my son doesn't want his picture on the blog but I can show you our trees....

This is the big tree in the living room. I always do it in red and gold. In person it looks very elegant, and the tree itself almost has a frosted look so I think it looks magical. I love this tree!

This smaller tree is in our family room. This tree has ornaments going all the way back to my first Christmas when I was just 3 months old! This is where I hang all the ornaments that have special meaning to me. I wish my camera took better close-up pictures so I could show you some of them....maybe next year!

Ok, that's about all for now. I'm going to be baking cookies this morning and wrapping a couple of last minute gifts. I hope each one of you has the most wonderful holiday, however you celebrate it. You have all made a huge impact on my life and I'll always be thankful for that. If I could I'd reach through the monitor and give you all a big hug!

Merry Christmas....Happy Holidays....and I hope Santa is good to you!

Being Graceful is an Art....

Being graceful has never been one of my strong suits. Many times I think something got left out when I was "made" because I have no physical co-ordination and usually think I've really accomplished something when I can walk and chew gum at the same time!!

Yesterday I was looking through the cabinets to see what ingredients I had on hand to make cookies and what I needed to add to the grocery list. Most of the cabinets in our kitchen are too high for me to use without some help.

I pulled a chair over to stand on and that's when the fun began! My son was sitting at the table using his laptop and I was happily going through the cabinets....until I decided to get down.

Like a dummy I had placed the chair with the back behind me so when I went to step down I got caught in the back of the chair. My son said it was terrible watching me because he couldn't get to me in time....it all happened so fast....although it seemed to be in slow motion.

He said my head just missed the granite countertop by a hair! At first I thought everything was ok. I could move every part of my body and nothing hurt but as the day went on my wrist became very sore and I had very little strength in it. So here's the result of all that....

It seems to be a bad strain so mostly I need to not use it too much. No problem!! I just have cookies to bake and lots of crochet to finish before Christmas!! Wonder how fast I can teach my son to crochet????

PS - this post took forever because I'm typing with one hand!

Would You Believe: Part Two....

What a snow storm we had! Maybe not to someone who lives in Canada or in some of the northern states but for us living in Southern California it was something very unusual!

I think by the time it finally quit snowing we had about 10 - 12" on the ground! When we woke up this morning the sun came out full blast and it all began melting. Tonight it's getting down to 25º so I'm sure it will be a mess on the roads tomorrow with all that melted snow frozen on the road.

HB stayed home today because the roads were pretty bad this morning and the battery was dead in the big diesel truck! We got up early and I took some more photos....

This is the same scene that I showed yesterday....out our front door but now you can't even see the truck parked out there! That one tree on the left is probably going to have to come down because so much of it is broken. Branches are touching the gound with the weight of the snow.

This picture shows a table that is in the back yard....HB parked an old lawn mower under it until he can take it to the dump. You can see the amount of snow piled up on the table.

Yesterday the tv wouldn't work because the dish had too much snow on it. Today I wasn't able to get online most of the day because our ISP had problems related to the storm. Ahh....technology! I didn't mind not having tv....I baked cookies and made soup! I got a molasses cookie recipe from The Pioneer Woman Cooks and my son and HB both declared them delicious. The soup was a recipe that I got from one of the blogs I read but I don't remember which one....it was called cheeseburger soup and again they both loved it. It must have been good because I made a big pot of it and there was maybe enough for one bowl left over! So whoever posted that recipe....Thank You!!!

Today I've been playing with an early Christmas present. HB gave me a laptop! Now all three of us can sit in the family room and click away on our laptops. Once in awhile someone says "check this out" and we all type in the same web address. So even though we had some crazy weather for one day, it wasn't so bad.

Would You Believe....

As you know we live in Southern California in the high desert. This is what I woke up to this morning....this is looking out my front door.

And this is what it looks like at 11 AM....

My son went next door to take a photo of this....

It isn't often you see a palm tree standing in the snow!!!!

What kind of weather are you having? It's still snowing here! It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas!

In My Mailbox....

Lately my mailbox has been loaded with cards from everywhere....

so to all my blogger friends I say Thank You! I love getting cards at Christmastime and most especially I love getting cards from all of you.

I also had a little surprise in my mail from Vallen. She always sends the cutest gifts plus she had it packaged in such a beautiful way that I didn't want to open it....but I did!! Here's what she sent me....

I just love the sheet music as wrapper (I put it back like it was before I opened it so you could see) and inside was the fuzzy crocheted wreath pin. It's so cute and I LOVE it!! Thank you, Vallen.

It's a Banner Day!!

Here it is almost a week since I've posted again. Time really is flying by right now. My son has now been here for one month and it seems like about a week! We're still yakking hours at a time.

On another subject, I recently particpated in a Christmas banner swap with some of the GPS (Glitter Power Sisters.) I received my banner last week but didn't get it posted until now. I know....I'm bad! Here are a couple of photos of the banner I received from Ninnie....

I hung it over the fireplace but I'll move it when we build a fire....just in case!

I scanned the banner so you could get a closer look. Isn't it so Christmas-y looking? I just love it. Thanks, Ninnie. This will be part of my Christmas traditions from now on.

********************************************

I also finished another 9" x 12" zentangle-ish drawing....

I haven't named this one yet but I like it. It's a bit different from some of my others since it's mostly straight lines.

The Christmas Rush....

Can it possibly be December 8th already? I'm scurrying around trying to finish my Christmas cards and get them mailed but I do have most of my shopping done. I shopped online this year. I think I've only bought one item in the store. It's so easy to just let my fingers do the clicking!!

My son is enjoying the nice weather we've had recently. He still can't get over the fact that there's almost always sunshine when he wakes up. I put him to work yesterday! I told him he was on a busman's holiday because I needed him to help me go pick up our load of firewood for the season. He loved it! He said he misses messing around with wood....and he and the guy who sold it to me hit it off right away. They were talking wood and chain saws and Alaska. The guy had actually been to the little town where my son lives!

So now if the weather gets chilly enough we have a nice supply of firewood for the fireplace. I love a fire. If I could afford the wood I'd have a fire going all day long in the winter. There's something so comforting about a roaring fire in the fireplace or even in a wood stove.

I did another larger (9" x 12") zentangle-ish drawing a couple of days ago. This one doesn't do much for me but I was trying a style that I saw on flickr so it was mostly an experiment. Here is my "Urban Angel"....

I hope you all aren't giving up on me ever visiting your blogs! I can't seem to find any free time lately. I get out of bed in the morning and before I know it it's time for bed again and I've been on the go all day! Hopefully when I get my cards finished I'll have some time then. HB is working seven days a week for a little while so I'm trying to do as much as possible so he doesn't have too many things to worry about. The project he's on is a solar installation....a new experimental process....and it's partly backed by Google. They're on a big push to get it to the point of seeing if it will actually do what they think it will so they're working looooong hours. I barely get to see him!

Enjoy your day....I'll get by to visit soon!

I've Been Drawing Again....

I thought I was going to have some free time this week. My son went home with his sister for a few days and I should be spending time online visiting all my blogger friends. But I've been putting up Christmas trees instead!

Today I finished the one in the family room but I still have more to do to the one in the living room. It's very tall and I need HB to help me with decorations near the top. That might have to wait until the weekend when he will have some time off. Meanwhile my living room is full of big tubs of decorations and the kitties are loving it!

I also finally got back into the drawing mood. So the past couple of nights I've been working on a big zentangle-type drawing. It's about 9" x 12"....

I think I'll call it "A Garden of Dreams"

Zentangles Galore!

A few months ago I was invited to participate in a zentangle project....I think I mentioned it on my blog at the time. I couldn't show you any of the things I was doing because I didn't want to spoil the project. I received my zentangle book today so now I can share some of it with you.

Here is the finished book....the front cover....

The book is about 3" x 3.5"....small but jam-packed with art!

These are some of the pages I did....

Here are more pages....

This was a fun project because I love doing zentangles! I was invited to join this group through flickr and I feel very privileged to be in the company of the other artists who participated. I'll scan some of those pages to show you when I have a bit more time.

I'm So Lucky....

I consider myself one of the luckiest people in Blogland!! So many wonderful, creative people visit my blog, leave comments and encourage me in my art. It makes me feel so good....but then when I receive an award it's just extra special.

Yesterday I was lucky enough to receive two awards from the fantastic Alberta and Ava over at Amusing Muses. Their art is so impressive, so creative, and so unique that to be recognized by them is really a treat for me. Thank you for the awards!!

I love the colors of this award! It's so girly!! Pink and green always look great together. You should stop over to see the pink and green art at Amusing Muses right now. It's gorgeous!

Don't you love the little butterflies?

You know I'm extra busy right now with my son so I'm going to take the easy way out and hope no one is offended....I'm passing these awards on to everyone who visits here. Feel free to put the awards on your blog and enjoy them. I think you all deserve recognition for your creativeness....and for hanging in there with me. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I'm Still Here!

Hi everyone....I've missed you all over the past days but I've been having lots of fun visiting with my son. I know many of you have wanted to see photos of him but I'm sorry to say he isn't thrilled about having his picture on the internet. He's a very private person (remember he lives in a small town in Alaska!) and just doesn't feel comfortable with the thought of being on my blog....so I'll not be posting any photos of him.

I can tell you that we have talked almost non-stop since he arrived! He has tons of interesting stories about his town and some of the things that happen there. He's a great storyteller and I keep telling him he should write a book about his experiences.

We're getting ready for Thanksgiving....I think there will be about 15 people at the house. It will be fun....especially since HB does most of the cooking!

I hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving. Eat, enjoy your friends and families and I'll have more in a few days. My son is going home with my daughter for a few days so I'll be able to catch up on the blogs. See you then....

Finally....

My son arrived this past Monday and ever since then we've been busy talking and laughing.

He is enjoying the beautiful California weather we've been having....it's almost perfect right now. Every afternoon he spends a couple of hours out in the backyard just soaking up the sun. Right now in the town where he lives in Alaska the highs and lows for the day are only a couple of degrees different and they're in the mid 30's with a combination of rain and snow!! So to say things are a little better here is quite an understatement!

We haven't done anything special yet....just visiting and catching up. But I'm sure this next week we'll get out and start doing some fun things. It's just nice to have him here.

Still no new camera but I haven't been out looking for one. That's on my list for next week, too.

Actually nothing much is going on. I did a little drawing in my moleskine the other day but that's the first art I've done in a long time....

I'm trying to use any spare time I get to visit your blogs so you'll see me sooner or later.

I just learned about a fabulous giveaway on Debra's blog. It's a blog I learned about from Kate. Debra is giving away a beautiful journal that she made. If you like journals go check it out.

Still Wainting!!!

We're all still waiting on that jet plane to arrive. When my son got to Juneau they told him his flight had been delayed by three hours!! So he missed his connecting flight out of Seattle. The airline put him up in a very nice hotel so he spent the night in Seattle and will get here today at 2 PM. We're all anxiously awaiting his arrival....

That's LuLu on the top of the chair and Harley in the seat. They're waiting, too. (Thank goodness for photos I filed away! Still no camera!)

Waitin' on a Jet Plane....

I'm not Leavin' on a Jet Plane but I am waiting on one to get here. I'm so excited! Tonight my son arrives! I can't wait. Every other time he has visited us here it's been in the summer....and you all know how much I "love" summer! It's always been so hot and miserable that I haven't really wanted to get out and do much so this time when he said he was coming for the holidays I was thrilled.

Finally he may get so see more than our back patio! We can get out and drive wherever we want and we won't be in sweltering heat. Plus my son can actually get something to eat that isn't cold and popped into the microwave!

I still haven't bought a new camera but I'm sure that will happen soon but in the meantime HB can always take lots of photos with our "fancy" camera! Three days after my son arrives we'll celebrate his 45th birthday and there WILL be photos! This is an old photo of me and my son when he was only a little guy....now he's about 6' 3"!!

What a hairdo, huh! Sorry about the quality of this photo but so many of my older ones were taken with a Polaroid and are not holding up.

So for now, I may be a little distracted for a few days but it won't be like when I took my big blog break. I promise to still visit in between hugging my son!

SSSS....It's Only a Letter!

This blogging without camera (BWOC) stuff is tough. A couple of days ago Janet had an interesting meme on her blog. I thought it would be fun to try it so here's mine....

If you want to play, you just leave a comment on this post and ask for a letter. Then you list 10 things you love that start with that letter.

I emailed Janet (the other one....not myself!) and asked for a letter. Mine is "S"....

1. Sand at the beach....or anywhere else. I've always liked playing in sand. My dad made me a sandbox when I was a kid and I spent many hours playing there.

2. Sunshine. We have a lot of that here and if it weren't for the heat in the summer it would be perfect. I like lots of sunshine and blue skies.

3. Salmon. Yum!! I think I could eat salmon every day....and it's good for you.

4. Sketchbooks....I have several.

5. Being Silly!! I can still act silly and crazy at times....it's fun!!

6. Sumptuous....I just like the sound of that word.

7. Sweaters and sweatshirts....it's what I wear when it's chilly. I much prefer winter clothes to summer ones. There's just something so nice about a soft, snuggly sweater.

8. Stories, as in reading them, not telling them. I'm no good at telling stories but I love to read, and a good story is always what I'm looking for in a book.

9. Stars....the kind in the sky at night, not the kind in Hollywood!

10. Synchronicity....when it happens it seems magical.

And just for good measure, I decided to include one thing I don't like that begins with the letter"S"....can you guess what it might be?? You're right! My all-time least favorite thing....snakes.

I'm Just Rambling!

Trying to blog without a camera is just no fun! And I haven't had much time to shop for one. My son was supposed to be here yesterday but he had to postpone his trip by one week....so he will arrive on the 9th instead. He wasn't able to get all his work finished by the 2nd and he didn't want to leave it for someone else. You'd think I'd be all ready for him since I had originally planned for the 2nd but nooooo!

I'm still cleaning out closets and making room for his clothes and things. I bought some of those Space Bags and I'm giving them a try. I have so many clothes that are kept for sentimental reasons only, so maybe that will be a good way to store them. I really don't know why I keep them but I do!

Art has taken a back seat for the past couple of weeks. I fell down on the October challenge of drawing something every day. I think I made it through the 28th although some of them haven't been posted yet.

I'm going in six different directions once again....that seems to be my normal way of doing things! So forgive me if I'm rambling!

For lack of any photos I'll give you this quiz thingie I saw on Kathy's blog. I don't think this one sounds very much like me but it's about chocolate so I couldn't resist!!

What Your Taste in Chocolate Says About You

You are sophisticated, modern, and high class.

Your taste is refined, but you are not picky.

You are often the first to try something new.

You are emotionally expressive and sensitive.

You're effected by everything around you.

Your friends appreciate your open heart, but they are afraid of hurting your feelings.

You love the feeling of accomplishment. You enjoy doing what's important.

You feel lost when you have to do frivolous tasks or hang out with shallow people.

That's it for today. I hope everyone had a fun weekend.

Boo!!

Boo!! Did I scare you? Happy Halloween everyone! I'm wearing a most unusual costume as I write this....many of you will be shocked and surprised at my creativity but what the heck....ok, ok, I'll tell you. I'm wearing my jammies!

Now down to some serious business! A couple of days ago I mentioned that I was in a Black Cat swap, that I received my cat but couldn't get a photo because my camera broke.

HB to the rescue!! He brought the other camera home and I was able to get a photo of my little black cat.

It was difficult to get a good photo since it was dark last night by the time HB got home. Plus the fabric has sparkles that don't show up in the photo. Just take my word for it....the cat is cute, and soft, and cuddly, and sparkley, and I love it. Thanks again, Kai!!

Tonight we aren't doing the candy thing. For the past few years we buy candy and then get one or two trick or treaters so this year I'm just not doing it. HB goes to bed early and I don't want the doorbell to disturb him, and I doubt we'd have more than the usual couple of kids so this year there will be no treats at our house. I hope there are no tricks either!!

I think most of the kids in our neighborhood are older and have parties or other things to do on Halloween. Plus many of the malls and stores do treats for the kids. It just isn't very exciting around here on Halloween!!

Are you giving out treats? If so, what kind of goodies? Maybe I'll stop by and trick or treat at your house!!

Better Late Than Never....

I'm very very very late doing this....I was tagged by Louise just about the time I took my blogging break! I'm just now getting around to doing it! This was a fun tag to do.

Which brings me to this subject....I have been tagged numerous times to do that tag where you tell six or seven weird/unusual/odd things about yourself but I've already done this tag so many times in the past that I can't think of anything else to add. So with this tag today I'm calling for an end to tags on this blog. I love doing them when they're new and different but I can't usually think of interesting answers. So I am asking to please be let off the hook on future tags. Thanks!!

image from here

1. What are your nicknames?
In high school I was Jake, I've been called Jan, HB calls me "Ja-neigh"....sort of French sounding but mostly just plain Janet is what everyone calls me.

2. What game show and/or reality show would you like to be on?
I don't watch game shows or reality shows except for Dancing With the Stars and I definitely would NOT want to be on there!!

3. What was the first movie you bought in VHS or DVD?
I have absolutely no idea! I don't usually buy movies....VHS or DVD.

4. What is your favorite scent?
I like jasmine and gardenia flowery smells, but then I also like the smell of coffee brewing, and just about anything baking.

5. If you had a million dollars that you could only spend on yourself, what would you do with it?
I'd buy a small house and build a huge art studio out back, then fill it with every kind of art supply there is, along with books, books, and more books! And I'd take every art class I could find.

6. What one place have you visited that you can't forget and want to go back to?
Yosemite....it's one of my most favorite places ever.

7. Do you trust easily?
That depends. If my gut instinct tells me it's ok then I do but if not then I don't.

8. Do you think before you act, or act before you think?
I do both at different times. I can be very spontaneous and just jump right in but then I'm also very cautious at times and think about things too much!

9. Is there anything that has made you unhappy these days?
Not really. Except maybe for the current financial mess.

10. Do you have a good body image?
The image I have is great....but reality isn't! What's in my head doesn't match what I see in the mirror!!

11. What is your favorite fruit?
Oh, that's tough to single out just one. I love fruit. Watermelon is one of my favorites, or most any other melons....and berries....strawberries, blackberries, blueberries. Yum!

12. What websites do you visit daily?
Not many unless you include blogs....then it would be too many to list here!

13. What have you been seriously addicted to lately?
I'm not sure I have any real addictions....except buying books and art supplies!!

14. What kind of person do you think the person who tagged you is?
Vivacious, creative, friendly, and down-to-earth.

15. What's the last song that got stuck in your head?
Probably some commercial jingle.

16. What's your favorite item of clothing?
My purple jacket and my Dansko shoes.

17. Do you think Rice Krispies are yummy?
That's an odd question! But, yes, I like Rice Krispies.

18. What would you do if you saw $100 lying on the ground?
If there was no other person around that could have dropped it, I'd probably pick it up. Actually when HB and I were on a trip once, he got out to make a phone call at a pay phone (cell was dead) during a huge rainstorm and he looked down and there was $200 laying on the ground!! The phone was in a fairly remote area and there was nothing and no one around. We did a few extra things on that trip!!

19. What items could you not go without during the day?
Ice cold water, my glasses, and books.

20. What should you be doing right now?
Since I'm doing this after HB has gone to bed (last night) absolutely nothing!! This is "my" time.

I hope no one is offended by what I said about not wanting to do any more tags right now.

A Black Cat and a Question....

I mentioned in my last post that my little point and shoot camera has quit working. It's the one I use most of the time. We have the Rebel XTi but HB uses that one because I don't have much luck with all the dials and settings that it requires! I'm the kind of person that wants to just pick up the camera and click a button and that's all! Oh, I know, I don't get the best photos that way but I don't have a lot of patience when it comes to cameras.

You're probably asking why this makes any difference right now....I was recently in a black cat swap and my black cat arrived yesterday afternoon. I meant to have HB take a photo of it when he got home but I forgot. And wouldn't you know, today he took the camera with him to work! He does that sometimes....you remember the photos of the wind farm.

image from the internet

So I have this adorable little black cat that I received from Kai and I have no photo to show you today....that's why I put the image from the internet up there! But as soon as I get one I'll show you 'cause my black cat is much cuter than that picture above!! Thanks, Kai! I love it. Now I just have to put it up high enough to keep it away from Harley and LuLu!!

In the meantime, any great suggestions on a really good point and shoot camera? My old one was a Kodak. Also I have a "technical" question for any of you. I don't know anything about this kind of thing, as you'll see from my question....I have most of my photos stored in the Kodak program that came with the camera. If I buy another brand of camera and install that program will I still be able to open those Kodak photos? And if I buy another Kodak and install the new program will it erase the old one along with any photos that are stored there?

I'm such a dunce when it comes to stuff like this!

A Little of This and a Pinch of That....

Even though I'm "technically" back from my blog break I still haven't had much to say. Anyone who knows me will find that hard to believe!! I usually talk a mile a minute.

But I did see something on another blog that I wanted to pass on to you for consideration. The first is from Kathy and it's for a good cause....knitting or crocheting a scarf for The Special Olympics. You can read about the specifics here. It doesn't have to be anything fancy or intricate but it does have to be done in Delft blue and white....the colors of The Special Olympics. So if you can knit or crochet please consider this worthwhile project.

Another thing I saw was on Serena's blog and it was one of my favorite things....a quiz thingie!! Here's my result....

You Need Some Purple in Your Life

Purple will make you feel ambitious, independent, and creative.

And with a little purple, you will project an aura of individuality.

If you want more extravagance, you've got to get a little purple in your life!

For extra punch: Combine purple with green or orange

The downside of purple: It can evoke sad feelings

The consequences of more purple in your life:

You will feel an increase in your artistic abilities

You will find balance in the most chaotic parts of your life

You will feel calm and will be hard to disturb

What a perfect color to need more of!! You all know I'm a purple gal anyway so this was just icing on the cake.

And last but definitely not least, I won a giveaway over on Vallen's blog. Go there to see a much better photo as mine is from the scanner....my little point and shoot camera bit the dust! Here's what I won....

The pretty, fuzzy brooch was the giveaway but Vallen is so generous....she included the wonderful felt necklace plus some yummy drawing paper for me. I can't wait for sweater weather so I can wear my new brooch. Thanks, Vallen....I know I'm really late posting about this so please forgive me!

I'm still making the rounds of blogs so be patient with me....I'll get by to visit as soon as possible.

Ready or Not Here I Am!!

I had a nice loooong post all ready to go but Blogger ate it!! And I had "saved" it but it isn't here now. What gives??

I guess you'll get the short and sweet version so here goes....I enjoyed my time away from the blog but didn't get much done. I've learned something about myself and that is whatever I have to do, I'll use whatever amount of time I have to do it! So with all that "extra" time not spent on blogging, I just spread my other chores out over that time.

My painting classes are great and I'm having fun although all I've painted so far are a couple of backgrounds and laid down the gesso for a face on one of them. I have drawn a lot of faces (they're over on Artopia) and kept up with "The Big Draw" so that's good.

One afternoon last week, I had some time to play in the studio. That was the day I put down the gesso for a face....and I got all my face colors mixed up and was ready to go when the phone rang. It was my son calling from Alaska!!....so the paints sat there and dried up.

(image of Alaska from the internet)

He called with great news....he'll arrive on Nov 2 and be able to stay through the holidays!! We're all happy about that....plus he'll be here for his birthday, too.

While he's here I'm going to try to lure him back into art. As a kid he was a member of a young artist's group, and he continued on with art, taking some graphic art classes in college. But I don't think he's done anything art related in years. So I'm giving him free rein in the studio and we'll see what happens.

Ok, that's about all I can remember from my original post. And just so you know it's really me I've included one of those quiz thingies! For some reason it won't load up any closer so you might have to scroll down a bit.

You Are 84% Interesting

Believe it or not, you are a very fascinating person.

You're probably too busy being interesting to realize exactly how interesting you are.

You have a rich, full life. You are curious about the world, and you are very open to new experiences.

You have a lot to talk about, and people find you to be an amazing conversationalist.

And most importantly, you are truly interested in other people. How could anyone find that boring?

You truly listen and learn from others. You're not self absorbed or shallow.

I'm Usually Not Political on Here....

I'm not sure what your political views might be but my cousin sent me a link to a blog written by an 80+ year old woman who has a wicked sense of humor, a quick wit, and definitely a way with words....and some of them are not for everyone. Be warned! She might be offensive to some people but I found it hilarious and worth reading. Apparently I'm not alone as she is getting hundreds, and sometimes thousands of comments! If you're a McCain/Palin person you might not enjoy it as much but otherwise give it a peek at MargaretandHelen.

So Many Special People....

I've been enjoying my time away from my blog but I miss everyone! I have been by to visit a few blogs when I've had the time and I've even left a few comments. But mostly I've been swooning over the cool weather we're finally having here. I'm in heaven....it almost feels like autumn!

Now since I've been away, I've received some blog awards! Maybe I should take a break more often!! Just kidding!

One of the awards went to my art blog....the first one it's received!! Go on over and check it out! Then Renea gave me a gold card award on this blog. Thank you, Renea!!

The other award came from Angela and it's an award for friendship. Thanks, Angela.

I always appreciate the awards that are given to me but I hate to single out people to pass them on to. Everyone who visits my blogs is special to me and they all deserve these awards. So once again I'm going to say....I give these two awards to each and everyone who visits here. Feel free to take them and display them on your blog.

A Quick Little Post....

Just popping in to say that I've been posting some drawings over on my art blog. I'm still taking a break but I'm also doing my class and I'm participating in The Big Draw so I'm doing a little art. I miss everyone and I'll be back soon.

Scattered and Unfocused....

Yesterday I wasn't able to use the computer very much. We had lots of thunder and lightning and there was something strange and wet falling from the sky! I think it was rain but since I haven't seen any for such a long time I'm not sure!! :-) But while it was stormy I kept the computer off....so not much got accomplished online.

It wasn't quite this dramatic but I like this picture from the internet....maybe because it has a lavender sky!!

********************************************

I've been doing some soul searching recently and I've come to the conclusion that I'm suffering a bit from blog burn-out. My thoughts are scattered this way and that and I have so many different interests that my head is spinning. I'm constantly getting on my own case if I don't post something every few days, and that isn't what blogging is about. When I started this blog it was fun and I tried to think of interesting things to write about.

Could it be that I've run out of anything to tell you?? Or is it just that I am scattered and unfocused and want to try everything? Whatever it is, it's getting in my way.

I have two online classes coming up in the next little while, one is the "All About Faces" painting class with Paulette Insall and the other is Sara Whitmire's Altered Journal class over at Joggles. When they begin I want to be able to give them my full attention. Paulette's class begins October 6th and the day after it ends the class with Sara begins.

So I'm going to be a busy bee. Plus I'm thinking of making some changes to my blog. Maybe even moving it to another site. So with all these things going on I'm not sure how often I'll be posting....or visiting right now. I'm sure it won't be daily. I hope you won't forget me and you won't give up on me but you might not see much of me for awhile.

********************************************
Happy Birthday to my cousin, Mary Anne and also to Gemma!!

Where's Autumn??

I'm sure you all know I'm waiting impatiently for fall to arrive here. Today we're expecting temps of 98º!! So no fall-like weather today. Just sunny and hot. So when I saw an autumn test on Sara's blog I just had to do it.

Your Autumn Test Results

You are a dynamic, vibrant person. You aren't afraid to pursue your passions.

When you are happiest, you are calm. You appreciate tradition and family. You enjoy feeling cozy.

You tend to be afraid of change. You are never ready for things to be different.

You find hard work to be the most comforting thing in the world. You like the feeling of accomplishing something.

Your ideal day is active and full. You like to keep busy with your favorite things, and you appreciate a routine.

You are very impatient. You spend more time waiting for something than actually enjoying it.

This one sounds a lot like me! In fact, this little test comes very close to being 100% right about me.

Now I have a question (technical) for you. Do you ever visit blogs that cause IE to tell you there's a problem and it has to shut down?? This happens every time I visit Sara's blog! So consequently I read her blog on my google reader and if I want to make a comment I send her an email!

Being in a Purple Mood....

This morning I tried to catch up on a few blogs. If I missed you don't worry, I've still got more to read!

There isn't much going on around here now that the excitement of a birthday has passed but I did see this a few days ago and of course since it's about purple, it caught my eye!

I got the supply list for my upcoming painting class and went out yesterday and got most of the things I need. The rest had to be ordered online. I'm getting excited about this class!

Other that that, I'm just still cleaning and re-organizing the house. Seems to be an ongoing project for me! No art is being done right now. But I'm sure that once the class begins I'll have lots to show you.

Celebrating Being 65!

Thank you to everyone who sent me cards and messages yesterday. It was wonderful. I still have lots of emails to answer and I promise to get to them today.

First of all I want to share a very special gift with you. As you know, Gail and I have been friends since we were about 9 years old. She is my BFF. When she sends a gift you can bet it will be something really great and this birthday was no exception. Just look at what she made for me....

This is a handmade doll that is about 12" tall. She has fabulous spiked white hair, little wire glasses, a sparkly purple outfit and purple earrings, painted toenails and purple sandals! She sits on the edge of my desk with her legs crossed and she has a small book with her. The book is beyond special! It's all handmade, too and includes small photos of me and Gail in 5th grade, a photo of my grandma talking on the phone (which is one of my favorite photos of her!), and even some little paper dolls because Gail and I used to spend hours drawing paper dolls and designing their outfits. Oh, and there's also a miniature of one of my drawings along with a bee!! It is truly a little work of art in itself. I just wasn't able to get a good photo of the book although you can see it beside the doll in the photo.

Gail also sent me a beautiful journal....

She definitely knows how to spoil me!! Thank you, Gail!

And that wonderful Kai sent me the cutest little wind chime....and guess what....it's purple!!

I hung it on a hook on the fireplace so I could get a photo of it but it's going to hang in the window of my studio. I usually have the window open in there year round and the breeze will make the wind chime tinkle. Thank you, Kai!

Maryellen sent me one of her fantastic ATC's....

The background is gold and doesn't show up too good in the photo. On the back it says this is #1107!! That's how many ATC's Maryellen has made! And I'm lucky to have several of them! Thank you, Maryellen!

I got many other gifts but I won't show them all to you. I got books from my daughter....wonder why she did that? :-) And my son called me from Alaska. I also got a phone call from Lisa, and a couple of my friends who don't have blogs. So I had a pretty busy day. Not to mention the great dinner I had....red snapper and scallops....yum! Oh, and HB got me a birthday cake, too. But you know me....I don't like cake so I really didn't eat any.

Oops! Now how did that photo get in here??

PS - I added a new photo on my profile, too.

A Milestone....

License plate

Map of Route 65

Kawasaki Motocross KX65

2008 Mercedes Benz CL 65 AMG

Map showing in blue the population over the age of 65.

What do all these photos (not mine but taken from the web) have in common?? They all contain the number 65. And why is that important? Because today is my 65th birthday!!!

I had all kinds of plans for things to do on my blog to celebrate. Notice I said "had"....they have all fallen along the wayside! One of my biggest problems has always been that I have good intentions but lousy follow-through! Hopefully I can work on that character flaw during the next 65 years!

Now I'm off to eat cake and open presents. I'll share those with you tomorrow.
