Books, Movies, and a Little Bit of Art....

Do you ever read books a second time or even more? What about movies? I ask because I recently re-read "The Shell Seekers" by Rosamunde Pilcher because it's been made into a movie and is going to be on tv Saturday evening.

I read it the first time when it was first published....and loved it. It had been long enough since I read it that this time it was almost like reading it for the first time.

There aren't too many books that I've read multiple times but "Gone With the Wind" is one of them. I read it the first time when I was in high school and read it over and over several more times when I was young....but have no real desire to read it again now. Plus I can't tell you how many times I've seen that movie! The first time was when I was just a toddler but I have strong memories of certain scenes from that time. My mom loved GWTW....I think she had a crush on Clark Gable!....and we saw it every time it came to our hometown. Then I've also seen it several times on tv but I wouldn't go out of my way to watch it again even though CG is pretty easy on the eyes! By now I think I have it memorized!!

HB and I don't buy movies, never have. I just can't see why I should buy them and store them when I can rent whatever I want to see. Plus most movies I don't care to watch over and over. It's bad enough that tv repeats certain movies just about every week! Unless it's something I really connect with, once is enough for me and a movie.

On another subject, I'm still tweaking the studio workspace. I've set aside a box for all the WIP that I found. I may never finish all of them but at least now I know where they are. I did a quick doodle last night....

It sort of reminds me of a pineapple top but I really didn't have anything in mind when I did it.

Ok, I hope you all have a fun-filled weekend. I won't promise that I'll post anything over the weekend but I might if I get creative!

NOTE: For those who've asked, "The Shell Seekers" will be on Hallmark channel at 8PM central time on Saturday May 3rd. Check your local listing to be sure of the time where you live.

  1. Haven't read the book but I do like the title. I've noted it down.

LOVE your doodle! I thought of a pine cone peeking out from behind leaves. :)

  2. I do read books over again. And I do watch movies I like over again.
Gone With The Wind is my all time favorite, my Mother watched it every time it came on TV also. She and I had so little in common, but we did love to watch curtain things together. She loved Miss America contest, and when I was little it lasted a week. It was also on till late at night, I was so happy to share that time with her. Everyone in bed, it was our time.
Your craft room is wonderful, now you can settle in and enjoy it soon.
I am getting ready to paint my kitchen soon. It is a leaf green and I am ready for something else. Our first floor is very open, you can see into each room from the other. So I am thinking about color right now that will be happy with the other. My living room and office is a baby peach, and I have really enjoyed it with the brown and rusts.
It does remind me of a pineapple, but more beautiful.
I will watch to see if the movie from you book is on here....

  3. "The Shell Seekers" is near the top of my all time favorite books list. I have - and have read - all her books.

Is it the Angela Lansbury movie from some years back? I just couldn't picture AL as the Shell Seekers woman.

I don't read too many books over and over, because there are so many new ones to read. But I have read "Rebecca" several times and was thinking recently about reading it yet again. I have also read "To Kill A Mockingbird" multiple times and could read it again.

  4. Janet,
I do love that book and I have the movie on tape., Angela Lansbury played Penelope, but they changed the story quite a bit. Its still a nice movie though.

  5. Hi Janet! Wanted to let you know that upon return from Alaska, your card were waiting for me -- oh they are lovely! I'm going to play around and see if I can resize the larger ones -- will let you know how it comes out.

Never heard of this book, but been on a kick with like Harry Potter and other "kids-ish" books for years now. With the exception of the Outlander series which I've read twice now! And I'm a film freak -- watch stuff over and over, even after it's memorized in my head :) I especially enjoy William Powell flicks... and a few choice Bette Davis films like Now Voyager or The Man Who Came To Dinner.

Hey, your doodle is sooooo cool!! I'm loving the black and white doodles -- beautiful...
    miracles,

  7. I loved that book too. At the time it was the first of Rosamunde Pilcher's that I had read, and I went on to read all of them. The Shell Seekers I have read more than once.
Did you know her son Robin is also a good writer..?

  8. Thanks for letting us know about the movie! It was a Rosamund Pilcher novel made into a
movie which was the first movie which featured young actress Keira Knightly, I can't recall the name now. It was about a boarding school and Susan Hampshire was in it also.

  9. I rarely read a book twice...but I did love GWTW and the movie as well.
I haven't read The Shell Seekers, but she's one of my mom's favorite authors. My mom is an avid reader and I know it's why she's as mentally alert as she is at 89. I can't seem to get into novels these days, not sure why. I'll read a few pages, put it down and let it collect dust for months.
Your doodles are always so neat!!

  10. You won! I pulled your name from the bowl this morning. Please send me you addy so I can get it out to you. My email is

    brandygerber (AT) hotmail (DOT) com

I also really cant choose which to send, so head over to my blog and let me know if you'd rather receive the lion or the frog sign.

I'm married to a movie junkie and he/we watch movies over and over. I just grab some art to work on and sit with him while he watches. My favorite book to reread is The Hobbit/The Lord of the Rings.

  13. Hi Janet,

I've neglected everyone in bloglandia for an entire week and just getting back into the swing of things. I think a good title for what you think looks like a pineapple would be: And Queen Elizabeth continue down the street ignoring the peasants who gapped at her finery. But, hey, that is just me.

  14. You know the name seems so familiar, I think I read it years ago, and just can't remember it anymore. Maybe I need to read it again, lol. I do read books over and over again if they're some of my favorites, and the same for movies - though we only have a handful on DVD - mostly ones for the grandgirls, but there are a couple that are as much if not more for me :) - Wizard of Oz and also, Miss Potter - oh, and Wallace & Grommett - I think I like 'em better than they do.
Used to re-read (and re-watch) Gone With the Wind, multiple times, but its been awhile now - so maybe I'm 'over it' now, lol. Love the drawings, Janet!

  15. Gotta say - love your studio space! Looks organized and inviting! And I love your latest doodle. You have such a unique fresh style.

I've not read that book yet...will have to put it on my list of books to read....I'm currently stalled in my reading of two books and just finished a book on tape. (Not to mention I've been reading 4 art related books off and on for months..but haven't finished any LOL. I need to learn to focus on ONE thing at a time!)

  16. Love your pineapple top. You have such a clean and graphic style.
I'm with you regarding books and fims.
The only books I've ever re-read are those of Diana Gabaldon's 'Outlander' series. Wonderful books. I'll read them some more too.
    Never buy films either! LOL

  17. I have not read the “Shell Seekers” and missed it Saturday.
Maybe I will pick it up for my summer read…

I have read a few books over again, mostly because my kids are so far apart…
"Anne of Green Gables" I read as a child and had to read it with each of my daughters.
It is a book that I love and never get tired of ..
Julie mentioned “To Kill a Mocked Bird“….. One of my all time favorite books and movie…
Also shared the reading of this with my kids…

Reading a good book for a second time is like visiting a very good old friend.. You know you will enjoy the company..

  18. I wish I had Hallmark channel -- I love that book. And like you, GWTW is a read-more-than-once. I, too, am working on my art/creation space. It takes a bit, doesn't it. You want it right and sometimes, it's just not happening! But it sounds as though you had a lovely weekend and I do love stopping by!

  19. Oh Janet...I absolutely loved this book!!!! I think I will read it again this Summer....(it's a wonderful Summer read!)......I buy movies for when I get old.....Andy and I will have movies to watch!

  20. Hi there! I see you have been busier than me, I am battling to get motivated to start painting again! I like the doodle, almost looks like there is a lady in a flowing dress there somewhere, with tight curls on her head!
I have such a horrible memory that I have been known to take the same book out of the library twice, and get halfway through, with a vague niggling sense of familiarity before i realise I have read it before!

  21. She is my all-time favorite author. She hasn't written in quite a while and I miss her novels. :-( Her son is not too bad either. Sorry I missed the movie. Will have to look for it again sometime. (Have you read September?)

  22. Love this doodle. I kind of expect there is a women hiding inside. Seems like the hem of her dress is showing!

I never read the Shell Seekers but I know my mom loved it. I guess I missed it. That's the good thing about a fading memory you can watch movies over because much of the time I have forgotten the plot line.

Normally I don't like reading books or watching movies twice. But the ones I love, like "Children of a lessor god", "Sound of Music", "Good Will hunting" I will watch over several times and enjoy it with a different perspective each time!
