It's a Special Day for Us....

Thank you for all your wonderful comments on my soul journal! When I finished it I knew I loved it but apparently so do you. That's a good feeling to have created something that everyone seems to like. I appreciate all your comments and suggestions and would love to have it printed but since I used quotes from other people I don't know if that's possible.

*********************************************

Today is a big day around here! Today is HB's birthday! We're going out for lunch, maybe a little side trip to B&N, and then tonight I'll make his all-time most favorite meal which is spaghetti and meatballs. Thank goodness it isn't something like pheasant under glass!! I can usually turn out a decent plate of spaghetti without too many disasters.

While I was on my blog break I did a few art journal pages so I'll show them from time to time. Here is one of them....

I'm not sure if you can tell but I used gel pens and wrote between and on the painted lines. I wanted it to be there but not to be easily read....sort of there but not there if that makes any sense.

I hope you have a wonderful day....we're expecting a little rain.

My Soul Journal....

WARNING!!! This post has a lot of photos! Back last year I took a little class with Mary Ann Moss....it was a stencil journal book class. I cut all my pages and spray painted them but didn't ever finish them (what a surprise!)

When I was on my blog break I decided to work on the pages but I couldn't remember how the book was supposed to be assembled. Luckily, I discovered the Urban Journal class and I used a modified version of that style to put my book together. I used the cover from a small book I had in the garage and it fit perfectly. I'm going to jazz up the covers a little more but for now here's what I have....

Page one and the inside end paper.

Pages two and three.

Pages four and five.

Pages six and seven.

Pages eight and nine. I sort of messed up my writing but I think it's ok.

Pages 10 and 11.

Pages 12 and 13. (The yellow bird is not quite as bright as it appears here.)

Pages 14 and 15.

Pages 16 and 17.

Pages 18 and 19.

Pages 20 and 21.

Pages 22 and 23.

Page 24 and the endpaper.

I love this little book! I'm calling it My Soul Journal.

A Quick Little Update....

Hi everyone!! Did you miss me? I've been enjoying my blog break but I thought I'd just check in and let you know I'm still here.

Things have not gone as planned....do they ever?!! I haven't done as much painting as I thought I'd do but I have been doing some artsy things. I'll show you some of it today.

First off I made a cool little urban journal. I took a class here....quick, easy to make, and fun.

I'm going to use this journal for ideas....I think I might have gotten the letters a little close together but I think you can read it. I made this from an old Nancy Drew book so it isn't very big....about 6" x 8" overall. I like how the pages hang out from the cover and also the use of cardboard on the cover. All in all this was a great little class.

I've also been doing some spray painting again. I managed to have a day last week without any wind and I made use of it....

These are just three of the ones I painted. They're about 15" x 22" and they're done on some packing paper I saved. The papers were all crinkled so that makes them even better. I now have a stack of them for later use.

I also painted and stamped on some newspaper ads....this is one of them....

And here's some tissue paper (still on the waxed paper I used) I painted and stamped....

All of these will be good to tear up and use in collages.

I did lots more things but for now that's all I'm going to show you. It's been fun just playing and doing whatever I want in the studio without any restrictions or "I-have-to" feelings. Oh, and I also received my little journal from the Art House Co-Op so I'll be drawing and working in it. The theme is "This is where I live"....I have some ideas for it already so I'll be showing you that soon, too.

While I was gone I'm sure I missed all kinds of fun things here in Blogland but I also learned that it really does help to just pull back a little bit from time to time.

If anyone is interested I've been putting some springtime photos on my photo blog....the link is over there on the right side of this page.

Have fun and I'll see you soon....

Getting Inspired and Being Committed....

No, I don't mean being committed to the loony bin!! Although I sometimes feel I should be! What I'm talking about is being committed to your art.

I have been reading a lot of things online about doing art, getting inspired, being committed to art every day, etc. Right now I think I'm suffering from spring fever. And I'm also getting a little burnt out on art journal prompts....especially when they don't inspire me. The prompt for yesterday was "cabbage, carrots, potatoes and corned beef"....I don't eat meat and even when I did, I didn't like corned beef! So that prompt didn't do a thing for me. I know I could have done something with an Irish theme but that didn't inspire me either since my first husband was Irish....100%!! What I'm trying to say is, prompts are great IF they inspire me; not so great when they don't.

I've also been thinking about the art journal pages I do every day. I enjoy doing them but when I finish my page each day I think "there....I've done some art today" and then I don't continue on with anything else. I haven't painted anything in months other than backgrounds for pages. I haven't done any stencil/spray paint work in ages and I love doing that. There are tons of ideas floating around in my head but I don't do them because each day I "fulfill my obligation" to create something by doing a page in my art journal.

None of this probably makes any sense to anyone else but I feel locked in a box of commitment and unable to move forward with other types of art. I don't know what it is about me and commitments....I hate quitting things in the middle! In other areas of my life I will always see things through to the end but with art it seems different. I think as long as I'm being creative each and every day, in some way, then that is what's important. I'd love to hear your thoughts and ideas about prompts and doing art each day and being inspired.

I've signed up to do a monthly sketch book project at Art House Co-op....it has to be finished and mailed by April 30th so that should keep me busy for awhile. I'm also doing some more postcard swaps and other small projects so art is a part of my daily life. And I plan to immerse myself in paint!! Well, maybe not literally but I do plan to paint more and still keep up with my daily journal pages but on my own terms....with my own ideas.

And I may be absent from Blogland for a little bit....maybe just a couple of days, maybe a week or so but I'll be popping in now and then to see what's happening. Right now I feel as if I need to concentrate on some art and finishing some of the WIPs that I have stacked everywhere!

These are just a few of the things stacked up waiting to be finished! The tall skinny collaged pieces are for a journal that was part of Julie's Super Nova class which I took last year. The smaller stenciled pages are for a journal class I took with Mary Ann last year. Neither of these projects got finished along with numerous others.

I hope you don't give up on me....I promise to have lots of finished art to share with you soon but I feel the need to take a little break and refresh myself.

Am I Hitting a Slump???

I hope wherever you are that you're experiencing some fantastic spring weather. I just posted a couple of photos over on my photo blog (link is over there on the right side....scroll down a bit) and will add a few more tomorrow. Every tree we have is full of blossoms! It looks so pretty. And we're expecting temps around 76ยบ today! I'm lovin' it!!

The past few art journal prompts for this month have been toughies for me! Either I'm just not thinking or I'm going into a slump but I don't think any of these are very good.

March 14:

This prompt was "rubber stamps"....you may not be able to see it but I completely covered the background with a stamp of tiny flowers, then I added the larger flower stamps. Nothing great. Just another page I can say I finished.

March 15:

This prompt was "self-portrait" and I know this is stretching it but I just couldn't come up with anything else.

March 16:

Today's prompt is "pretend"....so I'm pretending to make a page!! I couldn't come up with anything. The background is really interesting in person because I used a lot of metallic paints and then payne's gray over that. I guess I'm pretending to be an artist!

I'm off to enjoy all the warm temps and get some fresh air. I don't want to stay inside on such a beautiful day....

Art Journal Pages....At Last!

Thanks for all your comments....and, yes, my headache is gone. In fact, it only lasted for the one day and then I was fine. HB and I have just been busy working in the garage....still trying to get it organized! I'm not sure which is worse - my studio or the garage. I've been working on both places and I have to say the studio looks a little better now than the garage does.

I'm behind on posting my art journal pages but here they are....

March 11:

I was trying to make a sad little cartoonish character....the prompt was "orange"

March 12:

The prompt was "Sharpies"

March 13:

This one is my favorite. The prompt was "the one that got away"....at first the only thing I could think of was fish but then I turned things upside down and thought from a different angle.

The prompt for today is "rubber stamps" so I should be able to have some fun with that one.

I hope your Sunday is relaxing and fun....

Keeping it Going....

I'm so late getting this posted today. Most of the day I've had one of those nagging headaches....nothing really bad but just enough to make me uncomfortable. I'm also way behind on visiting blogs.

Here are the past couple of art journal pages....so far I'm keeping up. I have managed to do part of the one for today and hopefully I can finish it later tonight.

March 9:

The prompt was "collage" so I used that word. I should have made the letters read side to side rather than from top to bottom....is it too confusing?

March 10:

This prompt was "listen to music"....and since I don't usually listen to music in the studio I just used music as a general theme. This page had some left-over black paint from the previous page. I added red to punch it up a little bit. Then the sheet music seemed appropriate and the tulips just seemed to fit. The quote is by Sidonie Gabrielle.

Ok, now I think I'm going to take a couple of Tylenol and have a quick nap before dinner. Maybe I can get rid of this darn headache.

I hope you had a great day and did something you enjoyed.

It's Spring!

I thought I would show you the blossoms on one of our almond trees....this is for everyone who is still in the grip of winter and needs a little peek at spring....

Everything looks so pretty right now. That horrible decorative plum tree that I hate so much even looks beautiful all decked out in soft pink blossoms. The nectarine tree in the backyard is almost a hot pink and the apple trees are still deciding if they want to join in on the celebration. Up and down the streets I see white and pink blossoms on trees. It's beautiful!! And I wanted to share with you. Doesn't the grass look fantastic? For a few days it smelled to high heaven because we put manure on it! I'm sure the neighbors loved us but that gorgeous green looks great. Who would believe we live in the high desert!!

Now back to my art! The prompt for yesterday was to use this quote by Kurt Cobain - "wanting to be someone else is a waste of the person you are"....isn't that a great quote? At first I thought it would be difficult to do a page around that but then it turned out to be so easy.

March 8:

It was a no-brainer to use purple! I added a few doodles around the edges because that's what I like to do and Viola! Another page in my art journal!

It's All Over....

Whew! The Academy Awards are over. My feet are killing me and I still have a fuzzy head from all the champagne I drank last night! The parties went on forever and Josh and I made it to all of them! He definitely wanted to be seen with me!! But sadly I couldn't get him to give up any of the "Lost" secrets no matter how much champagne I got him to drink. Oh, well, it was a fun evening and I look forward to next year already.

This concludes our trip to Fantasy Land!

********************************************

Now back to reality! I managed to keep up with my pages while I was "out partying." I even did something in my moleskine which I haven't done in a long time.

First, here are my latest journal pages....

March 6:

The prompt for this one was "present"....if you remember, the previous one was "past" so you know where these are going! I used a stamp of a gift for the background.

March 7:

This prompt was, yep...."future" This one was a quickie! I glued down a piece of paper towel that I had used to wipe off excess paint, a piece of scrapbook paper, and a favorite quote. If you're interested in joining this March challenge you can find it here.

And finally here is the page I did in my moleskine. This moleskine is the larger sized one. I've done two of the smaller ones but I like this larger size best.

The face is a stamp and then I just added everything else.

Well, that's what I've been doing the past few days. I'm also working on some more postcards. What have you been doing? Are you being creative? I hope so. It always makes me feel better when I create something.

Have a fun day....

It's Party Time!!

Regular programming (art) will resume after this brief trip into fantasy land!

I don't know about you but I'm going to have a busy day! Today I have to do all those girlie things like a manicure, a pedicure, and a bubble bath. I have to get ready for the BIG party. What am I talking about, you ask?? The Academy Awards, of course!

If you've read my blog for a few years then you know I usually "attend" the Academy Awards. Three years ago I went with Johnny Depp....you can read about it here. (You might have to scroll down a bit to find it.) Johnny is always a wonderful date and we had a fantastic evening.

The next year I just couldn't find a dress that I liked so I skipped the awards. You'll find all my dress problems here ....again, you'll have to scroll down.

Then last year I went with Johnny again....if you're still interested in all this you'll find that date here.

I don't want to miss out on all the fun this year so I spent hours finding just the right dress and shoes. I shopped and shopped....and you all know how much I love shopping! Then I had my hair styled, my make-up done and now I'm just waiting for tonight when my date will arrive and whisk me away for an evening of fun, food, parties, and dancing. Are you going to be there??

Here's the dress I chose. (Remember this is all taking place in cyberspace so I can wear anything I want to and look fabulous!!)

here's the back....

It's all sequins....I'll be the glittery-est thing on the runway! I thought about wearing my signature purple and even found a couple of beautiful purple dresses but I decided to be wild and crazy and do silver!

Here are my shoes....

In real life I'd probably fall and break my neck if I wore these!! But aren't they gorgeous? I'll be dancing the night away in these.

Now for the make-up. I want to look my very best so I had it professionally done....

It's just amazing what they can do with make up these days! I don't look a day over 25!

Here's my hair....

Now that was the challenge! I had to have some extensions put in to get my hair to look like that!! And I'm not sure if I'll keep the flower....I think it's a little too much.

Now for the big reveal....my date! This year I had to tell Johnny no! Naturally he was crushed but I felt that people would be talking if we showed up together again plus I think he's pretty busy with the opening of Alice in Wonderland! So I'll be prancing down the red carpet on the arm of....

one of my bad boys....Josh Holloway. Josh cleans up pretty good after being on that island for so long! Maybe while we're out I can see if he'll tell me how "Lost" ends!

See you on the red carpet....be sure to say hi if you see me! Ciao, baby! Have your people call my people and we'll do lunch next week!

Me, My BFF and the Past

I am such a lucky person! I have the best BFF ever. Just look at this great postcard Gail made for me....

She used the picture I had on here of LuLu at the vet's office. And if you have a minute check out this fantastic page she did about our friendship.

Thanks, Gail....you're The Best!

********************************************

Here's the page I did for the prompt yesterday...."past"

March 5:

Sorry....it's a bit crooked. It wasn't quite straight when I scanned it.

If you'd like to join in the fun you can find the prompts at Art Journaling listed under March Challenge.

Have a great Saturday!

Another Challenge!

We received the BEST news yesterday!!! LuLu is doing great! She had a check-up to see how she did this past week and they did another blood test which came out very good. That means her kidney failure was caused by something she ingested and not for some other problem. LuLu is all finished with her meds and getting back to being herself. Thanks to everyone who sent her good thoughts and prayers.

******************************************

Now on to some ART! I belong to the Art Journaling group over on ning and this month they are doing a March Challenge. Each day there's a prompt listed to help you with ideas for an art journal page. I need all the help I can get so I joined the challenge. (If you go over to the site the challenge is listed along the left side of the page.)

I was a couple of days behind when I signed up so I've done two pages now for the first two days of March. I posted my own pages earlier in the week and now here are the ones I did for the challenge....

March 1:

The prompt was "start your engines"....I had already glued down some blue paper in my journal and added the diamond stamp along the side so I just used that page. The diamond shapes sort of reminded me of the checkered flag they wave at races.

March 2:

The prompt was "credit cards"

March 3:

The prompt was "blue"....this one didn't come out so good. I used a napkin and it was too close to the color of the background and just disappeared. I will probably write on the light blue areas at the top but haven't done that yet.

March 4:

The prompt was "doodle"....this one has tons of layers but they don't show up. I started by drawing with a black marker on the page. Then added some tissue paper that had a thin coat of gesso on it. After that I stamped on some more tissue paper and added it. Then I used some watered down acrylic paint to add some color. I also stamped some flowers with an aqua stamp pad and finally I doodled with a black pen.

When I have just a little bit of paint left in my craft paint bottles I add water to them to make washes. Then I have them readily available without any hassle. When I add water to a bottle of paint I mark the top with a big "W" so I know it's been watered down. That's what I used on the doodle page.

I'm working on today's page but had to take a little break. I hope you're all enjoying the day and doing something creative....big hugs to everyone!!!

Busy Making Art....

We have been having problems most of the day with our internet provider. We tried calling them and they had a recording on the phone to say they were experiencing trouble and the technicians were working on it.

So I'm way behind in emails and visiting blogs so bear with me for a little while. Naturally I have lots of things to show you today and the day is almost over!

Recently I was in a one-for-one postcard swap with Mary of Joyful Ploys and this is the gorgeous postcard I received from her....

The scan doesn't do it justice. And I forgot to scan the postcard I sent to her but I can tell you for certain that it was no where near as good as this one!

I did make a few more postcards and remembered to scan them....

1.

2.

3.

This is NOT my drawing. It's from a magazine and I just added the heart, the lips, and the crown. The red at the side is more of that packaging tape I found for $1. If you would like to have one of these postcards just leave me a comment and tell me which one and be sure to also give me a way to contact you and I'll send it out. First comment for each one will receive it.

I also made a bookmark....

I haven't added any fibers at the top....maybe a ribbon or some cool yarn. I'm not sure yet.

And last....here are my journal pages for the past couple of days....

March 1:

I know this is a bit different from some of my things but somehow I like it.

March 2:

I messed up the very first word on the page! It is supposed to be "there"....what is it with me and words?!!!

Ok, I'm really late getting this posted....I hope you had a great day.
