That Darn Wind....

Wouldn't you know I've been just itching to do some spray painting and of course we're in a very windy time of year. Yesterday it was rippin' and today is the same. So I'm trying to do some other creative things to take my mind off the wind. I made another piece of scrappy art this morning....

This began life as one of those over-sized postcards that you get in the mail....it was some kind of advertisement. I covered it with paper and paint and a few copies of "my gals"....added some stamps and a bee in the corner and said "that's it"....I might actually paint something this afternoon. After seeing "my gals" it got me in the mood for doing some crazy faces. So maybe tomorrow I'll have some to show you.

And lastly I'd like to say thank you to all the people who are following my blog. I don't always have lots of time for emails and blog visits so please know that I appreciate each and every one of you. I'm always happy to see new faces here on my blog and I love getting comments. I try to get around and visit as much as I can but some days it just doesn't happen. Today might be one of them! We have several things we have to take care of today so I won't be home until late afternoon.

A Fun Find and Some More Scrappy Art....

Last week HB and I were at the library and I slipped into the book store to have a quick look around. I just can't help myself! I'm like a drug addict in search of a fix! Well, I'm sure glad I took some time because I found a wonderful little book....looks almost brand new....and it was 50 cents! Take a peek with me at "Sabine's Notebook" by Nick Bantock....

I have another book by this author. It's called "Urgent 2nd Class" and it's all about collage and ephemera.

This envelope holds a letter....the book is described as an imaginary correspondence between Griffin and Sabine.

The page above is the front and back of a postcard.

This envelope holds a red greeting card.

This envelope has another letter and the other page shows the front of a postcard.

This envelope is made from some beautiful patterned paper and the letter inside has a painting of a lionfish on the header.

This entire book is just fascinating. All the envelopes still contain the letters and cards and they don't even look as if they've been read. The art work is incredible. I thought it was quite a find! Our library bookstore always seems to have something good either for cutting up for collages or for inspiration.

*********************************************

Now here's a couple more scrap collages I did....

The above is a two-sided piece....one is the front and the other the back. And here is another one....

These are quick and fun to do and they use up scraps that would otherwise get tossed in the trash. One of these days I hope I'll get inspired to do some more painting but until then I'm enjoying cutting, tearing, and gluing. It's therapeutic!

We've been having fantastic weather but today a front is moving in and by tomorrow it will be very chilly again. Spring this year has been fairly cool here....but I'm enjoying it. I know that hot stuff is on its way!

Playtime in the Studio....

When I'm not inspired to paint, I always turn to scrappy collage....and that's just about all I've been doing recently. Oh, I manage to slap a little paint on the backgrounds here and there but I haven't been inspired to actually paint a picture in quite some time.

So out come the magazines and books. Out come the scissors and glue. And the outcome is always a HUGE mess in the studio!! Here is my latest little creation. It began life as a Good Earth tea box....

I began by stuffing it with old plastic bags just to give it a little bit of stability. Then I completely covered it with masking tape.

Side 1

I painted it all over but most of it got covered with images....

Side 2

Anything and everything got used....leftover paper from when I punched some flowers....

Side 3

stickers, bits of security envelopes, dates from a calendar....

Side 4

I stamped (which wasn't easy since the box wasn't a hard surface!)....

Top

cut things from old magazines....

Bottom

and used images from a book on opera. I made a teeny tiny dent in some of my scraps but no one would ever know. The collaged box will sit on my desk in the office and remind me to get up and go to the studio!!

What are you doing today? Are you playing?

Some Fish and A Bird....

Today I have some fantastic art to share with you....it isn't mine! I was lucky enough to be on the receiving end of this art. If you aren't already familiar with Lee of Defining Me then you should get yourself over to her blog and have a look. Take some time to go back through her posts and see her art. I think she has a wonderful style and her art always makes me smile.

We are doing a postcard swap and here are the three postcards she sent to me....

Three Fish....

a bird....

and my favorite, this big red fish.

Aren't these great? I love them all. Thank you so very much, Lee. I think I'm going to frame these for my studio so I can see them every day.

Gorilla Snot....and Some Art

Did I get your attention with that title?!! It's what I'm using on my hair! For quite awhile I used a product called Got 2 Be Glued....I like my hair to stand up straight, kind of spiked and since I have fine hair it's a challenge and I need all the help I can get from some kind of strong product. Well, recently I went to buy some Glued and couldn't find it. TROUBLE! I don't like change. When I find something I like, I stick with it. While browsing the hair products I saw a colorful bottle and I couldn't resist....

And it really does say Gorilla snot....

Isn't that the most gross image to be putting on your hair!!! But it works! And it doesn't make my hair stiff and hard. It's easy to wash out and I love it! Who would ever think that at 66 years of age I'd be happy about putting gorilla snot on my hair!! And here's my hair now....

It's getting so gray that it's blending into the door behind me! I guess I'm a gray-haired punk!

********************************************

I'm still playing with scraps of paper in the studio....

This one is mostly magazine scraps and some paper tape.

The blue all came from magazines and the quote was on the seal of some sour cream I recently bought. I can find ephemera in the most unlikely places.

I've also been doing some Sharpie marker art in the evening....

Now I'm going to take my snotty hair and go back to the studio for some more play time! Have a great day....and SMILE!

Scrappy Art....

Thanks for all your comments about my food rant! I don't go there very often but sometimes things just make me SO angry and I have to say something.

Now on to something much more fun....ART! I've been playing in the studio with nothing much in mind other than using some of the stuff I have laying around. So I did a couple of postcards....

I don't know why that one little area looks so orange in the scan because in real life it's much more red! This one reminds me of planets but HB said "fireworks" the minute he saw it.

This one I used some of that brown paper bag that I painted. It says "romance" to me. I think I'll add something in the upper right corner but haven't decided yet. What do you think?

I did this on the front piece of cardboard from a box of crackers. And I didn't think about anything....I just grabbed and glued! I love it!

This is the back side. It's about 5" x 9" so I'm not sure what I'll do with this yet but it was fun and I used a tiny bit of scraps from my table. This is all either junk from the mail or things from a magazine or catalog.

Fun....fun....fun!!!

Food and Bones....

I have a new journal page to show you but first I'd like to bring your attention to something I feel is important to each and every one of us....our food! I mentioned this before but if you haven't already seen the movie Food Inc then check your local PBS channel because they are showing it next week. This is a movie that EVERYONE needs to see, and then we all need to start doing our part to change how our food is messed with and controlled by big corporate companies that don't have our health in mind!

Check out this website to learn about genetically modified food and why it's bad for us. I don't normally get on my soapbox here at my blog but I feel this is something monumentally important to each one of us. We can't live without food and if big corporate America is in control of our food what do you think that means for us??

Why are people so easily swayed to get behind other movements but so lackadaisical about something that is so important to our health?? People, our food is full of chemicals and very little nutrients and it's killing us! If we don't stand up and fight against this we will be giving these big companies the go ahead to go even farther with their experiments....and we're the guinea pigs!! Please, please, please learn about what has happened to the food industry. You'll be shocked. Here is another link that tells about some of the food additives that need to be avoided. There's all kinds of information out there so start thinking about what you're putting into your body! Let's put a stop to this insanity and get back to wholesome, real food.

**********************************************

Changing gears now....here's a little art for you. Recently Krissie had mentioned she hadn't been doing much art and was going to "pioneer the art of the blank page!" I agreed that I was in the same place with my art. Yesterday afternoon I went up to the studio and was sorting through some stuff when I came across a journal that I worked in last year. There are several pages that just have backgrounds on them so I decided to try and use one of them.

I picked one that just had some scrapbooking papers layered on and nothing else. I looked over at the corner of my table and there were some small squares I had punched out for something that never got made (how rare!) I just glued them down without thinking. Then I opened a drawer where I keep magazine images, and without looking reached in and pulled out the red image I used here! I used an "X" to stamp in the eye area. It must have been magic because it all works together and I now have a finished page....unless I decide to add some words later....which I might.

If I write something on this page it will probably be about Bones! I recently "discovered" this series on TNT in reruns and it also airs on Fox. I don't especially like the gruesome parts of the show and usually turn my head but I absolutely LOVE the characters! I record all the reruns each day plus the new one weekly and then watch them whenever there's nothing else I want to see on TV (which is most of the time!)

Ok....that's all I have today. Our weather has been beautiful so I think I'll spend some time outside today. Whatever you do, have some fun!

Postcard Winners....and a Little Art

Saturday morning....do you have a fun weekend planned? Tell me something exciting you're going to do because mine is going to be dull! HB has an appointment this afternoon so I'll probably continue my never-ending quest for some sort of organization in the chaos I laughingly refer to as my studio. I'm sure you get tired of hearing about me re-organizing and cleaning that space but it really is a constant thing with me.

I did take some time this morning to put all the names in a little basket for the postcard giveaway drawing. Since it was just a small giveaway I didn't use the random number thingie. I drew out four names and they are....Eden, Jeanie, Fannie, and Miss KoolAid. Be sure to send me an email (my email address is in my profile) and give me your mailing address so I can get them in the mail for you.

About all I've done artsy in the past couple of days is find even more unfinished projects! But I can show you a couple of journal pages I did recently....

I did this one when I was angry....can you tell? And what I was mad about had nothing to do with what I wrote about on this page!!! I wrote all over it with gel pens and they show just enough to know they're there but not enough for you to read it. It's mostly about how my mom never taught me how to do anything around the house. I never had chores....never had to do anything. As a kid I thought it was great but as an adult I realized she hadn't done me any favors.

I don't think this one is finished and I'm not thrilled with it but I'm still showing it. It's a little too cute or sweet for me....not edgy enough!

Here's a few snippets for you....

eating: my morning oatmeal with chopped walnuts, flax seeds, brown sugar and almond milk
hoping for: some artsy inspiration!!
wearing: jeans and a tee....the weather has been beautiful and warm

I'm off to continue my quest! Enjoy the weekend....hopefully I'll have at least one finished thing to show you. I won't bore you with any photos of the studio, clean or not!

Postcard Giveaway....

Quick post today....HB has a dentist appointment and since we have to get out anyway I'm going to check out a little antique mall we have here and run a few errands. Yesterday I made these postcards....

Dance

Ordinary

Rose

Mail

If you would like to receive one of these postcards in the mail just leave me a comment and be sure to say which one you would prefer....they each have a name under the picture. You have until Friday at midnight and then I'll draw four names on Saturday April 17 and mail them out. I'll do my best to send the one you like but if everyone wants the same one it will be determined by who asked first.

Oops! I almost forgot....I made one other postcard using my painted paper. This one went to the Art Co-op even though I was late mailing it. It should have gone last week. I hope they still take it.

PLEASE NOTE - THIS POSTCARD IS NOT AVAILABLE!!!!

Have some fun today....smile....and hug someone!

Having Some Fun....

Are you sitting down? Are you calm? Do you have a cup of tea/coffee near by? I don't want you to get overly excited but I do have a little art to show you! It isn't anything more than some background paper but hey, it's something!!

Yesterday I just HAD to get some paint on my hands! I started with a brown paper bag that I cut and spread out on my worktable. I added random bits of paper....just stuff that was already out on the table except for the paper doily. I had to search for that! I knew I had them but just where had I cleverly hidden them?!!

I used some small desktop calendar pages, some tissue paper and other scraps. Then I added a light wash of cream paint over everything....

This is the (cheapie) paint I used. I think it's from Wal-mart. I've said this before, but I like some of the really cheap paints when all I want is a wash or a hint of color. This particular paint works great when I want a hazy look. It pushes things back but doesn't completely cover them. I know it won't hold up over millions of years but for something like this I don't care....

Then I used a credit card and scraped on some pinkish-red paint....

Immediately I sprayed a light mist of water over the red and using another credit card, I scraped most of the paint off. Of course I smeared all that watery excess onto some other paper to use later....I don't like to waste paint!!

When that was dry I scraped on some aqua, misted it, and went through the same steps as before....

Then finally I did the same thing with some purple....

Here are a couple of close-ups of the paper when I finished....

I like how there's so much texture on this paper both from the paint and from the added papers and doily. I wish now that I had wrinkled the brown paper before I added to it. I think that would have given even more texture. Next time I'll try that.

This technique is nothing new. I found some notes that I had made quite some time ago so it was probably on someone's blog but I don't know whose. If it's yours or if you know who did it please let me know and I'll give credit. I'm always making notes when I see something I want to try but many times I forget to write down where I got the idea.

I did another smaller version on some heavy watercolor paper using different colors....

All in all, I like this technique and ended up with some good background papers....plus I had fun doing it.

Today I might use some of that paper for some postcards but who knows. At least I got in the studio and played around and I felt better after.

Have some fun today....

A Zentangley Drawing....

Believe it or not I actually did a little art yesterday! But it was just a zentangle drawing in my large moleskine....still no painting....

This one began with that square which is a stamp. I like starting off with a stamped image. It gives me a jumping off place.

A Peek at Our Office....

HB and I finally finished the office a couple of days ago. Now we both have our own work spaces. HB found a used office cubicle that fit perfectly in the space we have for him. It's one of those with padded walls....I wonder if he's trying to tell me something!! Maybe he needs a padded room to get away from me! This is HB's side....

And this is my side. HB built in the desk and shelves when we did the last office re-do. His area is just to the right, behind that bookcase....

And this is the other side of the room....

Sorry about the glare on the picture above the love seat....there's a big window just to the right of that bookcase in the corner and the light was shining on the picture no matter what I did.

This is the bookcase on the left side of the love seat. Would you believe these are all cookbooks!!! And I don't even like to cook! For some reason I love cookbooks though. I can spend a lot of time reading through them and drooling over all the goodies.

Now that the office is finished we're back to concentrating on the garage. You probably think it's taking us a long time to organize it but this is what we've been up against....

These are just some of the books stored in our garage! All those boxes are full of books. These are the leftovers from my online business. We're sorting through them, throwing out any that are worthless, donating others to the local libraries, and giving some to neighbors....anything to get them out of the garage. So when I say we're working on the garage it isn't just a weekend job! We have a three-car garage that pretty much looks like the photos above! But we're making headway. When we're finished I'll have a space where I can do messy art projects. I can't wait!
