The Start of a New Week....

Where did last week go? I turned around and it's already the start of a new week. Did you watch any of the 9/11 programs yesterday? We watched a couple of them. It's still difficult to watch and sometimes feels more like a movie rather than real life. I can't imagine what it must have been like to be in NYC on that day. I hope no one has to go through anything like that ever again.

As for art, last week was somewhat of a bust for me. I did manage to make one piece that I hate.

No matter what I did to her I don't  like I'm sure she will be gessoed over and started again. Any suggestions??
I also started a background on this canvas....

I have some idea of what I'm going to try on this one but haven't got it started yet.

Also while I was on blog break I did one of those grid drawings that everyone seems to be doing right now....

It isn't finished but so far I like the concept. I'm using colored pencils to add some color.

Okay, I think that's about it for me. What have you been doing?

  1. I love the background to your lady but she does not seem to be in quite your usual style. It will probably be just a minor alteration and you will like her. The grid drawings look fabulous, I haven't seen these before, but then you always seem to be one step ahead of the rest of us.

  2. HI Janet;
I love the background you started on the canvas and the grid drawing is beautiful. The girl... it's difficult to say, but whenever I do a different pattern on one of my girls noses and forheads I end up not liking it, maybe just change the pattern on that area?
    Hugs and blessings

  3. HI Janet;

  4. I actually like the girl, to me she just looks exotic. I suggest just put her away for awhile and you'll know what to do when you get back to her. I really like the gird page. It will be even more awesome when you finish it up.

  5. Anonymous10:45 AM

its hard when things just don't make us happy but sometimes if you put it away for a bit it comes to you, don't do what I do,, I keep on trying things until I make mud! I've been busy busy, the time is just a flying.

  6. I agree with Kate and Laurie: put the girl away and come back to her at a later time.
The grid page is really fun.
I've been making my coasters and cleaning, cleaning, cleaning (bleh!) This week, I want to do some postcards and play in my art journal more!

  7. The new canvas looks exciting, and your grids are beautiful. I think as the rest, put your girl aside and see what happens next time you look at her.
I watched programs from NYC several hours yesterday, it was very touching and I had to cry a bit too. I too hope that we've seen such things for the last time. That isn't too much to ask for.
Thanks for your kind words over at my site, they warms my heart.

  8. I buried my head in the sand a bit yesterday, and decided not to watch any of the anniversary coverage.

I love your grid drawing. I didn't realize it's a "thing" right now, but I'm always a fan of anything with that sort of orderly grid design. I agree with the others that before you do anything drastic to your girl painting, you should put it away for awhile to see it with perhaps a new perspective later.

  9. Hello Dear Janet, I went back and looked at some of the things you have been doing. You have so yummmie looking jams...and always your art pulls me in. I am back and have posted. I watched a couple programs about 9/11, it is still so hard. I really wasn't going to watch anything, but I did.
    Big Hugs, Mary

  10. your background on your girl is awesome. i bet if you put her away something will come to you.
i love your work and know that you will come up with the solution.

  11. I love that grid drawing, I saw that on Millande and thought about doing it, i love that girl, she is perfect, I love the design on her forehead

  12. I wouldn't give up on the girl as I can see potential...but it's you who really needs to like her.

    Love your other pieces!

We sometimes use the grids in artist's journals...a daily drawing in each grid to cover the week. Lovely job!

  13. Janet I think your girl looks quite sad--maybe that is the problem.

  14. love the idea of the grid drawing!!
hmmm the girl... For me, I'd say pattern her hair and her lips. or make them less dark.
    or start over.
or none of the above :)
I think you know what needs to be done the best and no advice can really touch what you and the art have already had the chance to discuss.
I'm so helpful, right. ha. sorry.

  15. Hi Janet, I did watch a couple of programs on 9/11. It's like if I keep watching them it will seem more real but it still seems unfathomable.
I like the backgrounds you have done. I'm not sure about the girl. Maybe her eyes could be softer but I'm not sure what feeling you were going for so it's hard to say. Sorry, not much help, am i?
I like the grid page, I haven't done one of these but it looks great for getting in a bit of art without having a full page to design.
I've been busy teaching my art journal class, cleaning the house and working. The first one was fun, the last two, blah :)
    have a great week

  16. We spent much of the weekend at a wedding, so I only saw a 9/11 show in the evening. It was tremendously powerful. Our world and our own lives changed that day, didn't they?

  17. i just noticed that your studio is published, well, CONGRATULATIONS!!!
yay! and yes i love everything! everything you do! so lovely always! i have been trying to get into those grids too but nothing yet let's hope i get into real soon

  18. "I did manage to make one piece that I hate!" You are totally cracking me up!! Love that - and I really thought it was cool - I love the patterns on the face and those beautiful lips (lips are hard for me) - and I really love what you have started with that background on the next piece. Thanks for your visit and for this fun post, xoox

  19. Ok I just think the girl has a lot on her mind... but I like her.
    Love your backgrounds, always do!!!!
Your grid is the first I have seen (good grief where have I been) I really like it and the whole idea of it.

  20. I like her just the way she is, why is that we artists are so hard on ourselves for? ha ha

Since I gotten my SD Card reader I not been doing any thing in way of art so to speak for I been spending much of time uploading photos, some gets editing while others done and the such as well as back to posting back at my blogs again.

I hope you don't gesso over her though.

  21. I've been so out of touch in bloglandia, this is the first grid drawing I've seen. It looks very cool, already. As for your lady, for some reason she reminds me of Wonder Woman.
We don't have cable, so we didn't see any of the programs, though we listened to a couple on the radio. So sad. I can't imagine what it must be like for anyone who was there. And yes, may nothing like that ever happen, again.
