Back to Normal Today...

Thanks for all your comments on my Oscar night out! Daniel and I had a terrific time. He's such a gentleman (darn!) my feet are killing me after wearing those 4" heels but it's worth it. And I have a tiny bit of a headache from all the champagne but otherwise I feel great. (If you don't know what I'm talking about, check out my previous post.)

Now back to reality! I have a few bits and pieces to share with you today. I belong to Mystele's Little Glimpses ning site (there's a link over in the right column) and she's been adding some great videos about painting faces. I've been practicing and trying to loosen up a bit. I just used a piece of Bristol so it wasn't the best thing to paint on but here is what I've been doing...

Just a few layers...and two of the heads are upside down.

More layers....

Still more layers...I have a long way to go but I'm practicing. That's what it takes to paint faces; practice, practice, practice and then practice some more! Mystele makes it look so easy. She's so free when she paints. I'm still trying to "control" it so I need more work.

I also recently scored some wood panels at the local dollar store...

I've sanded them down and will paint on them later. Where else can you get a nice solid substrate for just a dollar! The tall ones are about 6.5" x 12" and the square ones are about 6" x 6". I always keep my eye out for things like this at the dollar store.

So now I need to get busy and practice some more, plus I'm working on some projects that should have been finished a long time ago.

  1. Hi Janet! I just signed up for Mystele's Ning, and I'm in group 3 for the community hub - what a treat to see your faces, and to see what I have to look forward to!

  2. love those faces, and you are right about the wood from the dollar store, i do that to

  3. Smart child!
    Wood panels for a $1!!
    I'm impressed ~

  4. You remind me to scoot out to the dollar store -- we have one particularly good one and I always find something! Like your faces very much -- I so admire your practice and discipline!

  5. glad the oscars were fun! Your faces look great...I need to check out Mystele's videos!

  6. Your faces are amazing - love the paint layers - gonna have to go check out the video!

  7. Glad to hear you had an awesome night although I hope your feet didn't suffer too much.

Practise makes perfect and they look pretty good to me. What a treat to find those wood panels...can't wait see what you do with them.

  8. Your faces look great. I did a few more and posted to the forum. I really didn't like mine. I need more practice too.

  9. Great "faces" Janet!
Yes, it is important to get "loose" with our art, nice work. Thank you for sharing. :]
I can not wait to see what you do with those wood panels, and for a dollar, such a deal!

  10. I'm glad to hear that you had a great time on The Oscars.
The faces looks great, and what an interesting way to put them on the paper. It took a bit of time before I noticed the second face which is upside down. It's so well in line with the other ones.

  11. Hi Janet! Wow, I'm loving your faces you are doing! I just discovered Mystelle on Willowing Lifebook and she's fabulous! I will check out her site for sure. I'm going to go to your oscar's post next. I was just thinking about doing what you did at the dollar store - you clever girl. I finally got some board books last week. Our dollar store is very small so it's really hit and miss.
    Keep up the excellent work!

  12. those are wonderful little faces - I really want to be looser in my drawing/painting.

great tip about the dollar store panels!

  13. I thought about you on Oscar night and wondered who was going to be escorting you. The face art is really good! But I think you have always been great painting faces!

  14. Your faces are brilliant - I have enjoyed seeing your art develop and evolve over the years. xx

  15. You are so good about practicing faces. It must be gratifying to see your progress. I love the look of all those faces in different directions on the same paper...very cool!
