Magazine Canvas Painting...

It's been a few days since I posted. I wish I could say I've been super busy in the studio but that's not the case...just busy with other!

Today I did get to spend some time painting. I recently watched a video showing how to make a canvas out of magazine pages. This is where I saw it. I think Lee had it on her blog and I found it through her.

Anyway, I made myself a canvas out of some book pages I took out while making an art journal. I usually remove every third or fourth page and I keep the excess pages. You never know when they might come in handy! This is the magazine canvas I painted...

She's okay. I like her hair best. She has a pouty look which I wasn't going for but she's who showed up.

And this is what the back looks like...

It was fun and easy to do and I'm sure I'll be doing it again even though I have a stack of canvases on my shelf.

Another project I started today...

I printed out several pieces of my art and I have plans for them. I'll share as I go along. I wish printer ink wasn't so expensive. I'd print more of my art if I could afford to do it.

Tomorrow is HB's 65th birthday! Not sure what we're's his day to do whatever he wants. I think it might involve something outdoors. Happy Easter to everyone who celebrates it.

One WIP Finished...

Yesterday I worked on that big painting I started at the beginning of this year. I had planned to work on it for 30 days but somewhere around day 24 or 25 I lost interest. It's been hanging on the back of my studio door ever since. When I looked at it yesterday I knew I wanted to finish it and I did.

Here it is hanging from some clips on a shelf in my studio...

and here it is laying flat on the patio.
I think it could be hung in any direction
but I like it turned this way.
I'm happy with how it turned out...
even if I didn't end up working on it for 30 days.

This is a quick sketch I did last night while watching TV. It's just done on sketch paper using a 2B pencil. She looks a bit prim and she's going to tea with the ladies! I don't know where these faces come from...sometimes they surprise me when they show up on the paper.
I have some other projects I'm working on today but I'll get to my BIG canvas again soon...I have it all in my head. I just have to get it down on the canvas. This is one time when I know where I'm going before I start a painting. I usually don't work that way.

Have a fun Friday!!

Some BIG things...

I hope you all had a good day yesterday. Since it was Wednesday, HB and I spent the day running errands and doing our grocery shopping. It was a beautiful day to be out and about. I stopped at the library to pick up some books and they were having a book sale. Naturally I had to take a peek.

This is what I bought...only two books but they're just what I wanted.

A world atlas and a book on anatomy.

I placed the ruler on the atlas so you could see the size.
These are BIG books!
I plan to use the anatomy book for drawing help
and will most likely turn the atlas into a journal.

While we were out I also sent off the round robin journal.

I used some painted paper to cover the front of the envelope.
Several people at the post office commented on it.

Recently in the studio I began prepping a BIG 30" x 40" canvas.

I had to stand on my two-step ladder to reach the entire thing. I covered it with book pages first and here I'm adding a light coat of gesso. I have a plan for it and it's not a face!

That's all I have today. I've been cleaning the studio this morning and I found all sorts of unfinished WIPs. I guess I better get busy on some of them. See you tomorrow...

Trying Something New...

Just so you know, after I did that journal spread from the previous post (the gray one) I felt a lot better. I usually don't get depressed or sad so when it happens it's something I notice immediately. I'm back on track again and feel good.
Here's some of the art I've been doing...first off I did two spreads in Andria's journal for the round robin...

and here is the second one...

The one above is similar to this (below) journal card I did for Lee for her birthday...

I signed up for Misty Mawn's Face to Face class. One of the things she does is draw with charcoal. I have never used it very much so these are really rough!

This was my first attempt. I used a big pad of paper on an easel which I'm not used to...drawing from that angle was not comfortable for me.

Here is my second attempt...a little better.
I don't like her mouth and chin but there again
I was drawing from a different angle
than I'm used to.

I have a small tabletop easel I used for drawing.
I have another big easel but it doesn't fit in the studio!

I don't like the shading on the right side of her face.
I don't have a kneaded eraser right now...
would you believe Michael's, Joann's and Wal-Mart
did not have any kneaded erasers!

I will keep practicing and maybe one of these days I'll get a good charcoal drawing. Until then I'm happy with these beginning sketches.

While I was on Break...

After having a week off from blogging, I'm beginning to come back to life. And then only to learn that Google Reader is going away! I depend on it to keep me updated on all the blogs I read. After doing some research I've decided to try'm not 100% thrilled with it but I guess for now it's the best I can do.

Now I'm wondering how much longer Google will keep Blogger going!
In other news, I've been doing a little bit of art while I was on my break...while I was feeling so sad it also made me feel uninspired and this is what came from that...

As you can see I didn't use my usual bright colors...this is all done with gray and Payne's gray which is how I was feeling at the time!

As you can see, I was even down about myself
and my abilities to create art.

Then I started to do small things
like make some simple stencils using cardboard...

Basically something to add texture to backgrounds. I used an Exacto knife on most of them and a hole punch to make the small punchinella-type stencil. I wanted some holes but not in a pattern like punchinella. I wanted them more random.

This was the kind of weather I was enjoying on my break...warm and sunny. HB and I have been walking at the park most mornings.

I have more artsy things to share but I'll save those for tomorrow.

Time to Recoup...

As you all know, my son had been visiting me from Alaska.
He had been here since early in December
and just went back home this past Sunday.

I miss him and am feeling a bit sad right now.
So I think I'll take a few days off
and see if I can't come back with a fresh outlook...
and maybe even some new art!

Quickie Post...

This is the last day of my son's visit so I'm spending time with him plus baking cookies for him to take home and getting all the laundry done...but I managed to do a quickie painting.

I had an 8" x 8" paper where I had used blue spray paint with a letter stencil. I brayered  on some red...

and then painted the face. She looks more like 4th of July than early March but that's okay...

I'll post again in another day or two. See ya then!

A Visit to The Getty Museum...

First of all I'd like to ask if anyone else is having weird problems with Blogger. When I go to my blog the entire middle section where all the posts are written shakes like it's nervous! It moves up and down and frankly makes me nauseous to look at it. I've noticed on other blogs that sometimes different sections are shaking. What is going on! I tried contacting Blogger...what a joke. I hope my blog is not shaking when you visit. I've checked it on both my computers and it shakes but when I used my son's computer and used his login for Google my blog looked fine. Very weird!

I mentioned a couple of days ago that we visited The Getty Museum

(click any photo to view larger)

I had been there many years ago but they did a huge ($275 million) renovation a few years ago and it's fantastic. The weather was not the best that day so many of the outdoor photos are a bit gloomy looking. I want to go back when it's warmer so we can really see the grounds because they're amazing. They have a large underground parking structure and a tram that takes you right up to the museum.

These are the steps leading up to the main entrance as you arrive...

The stone that's on the steps is everywhere outside. There must be thousands and thousands of huge stone tiles used to cover the walkways and outdoor areas.

Many of the buildings are made of the same's everywhere.

There weren't a lot of flowers blooming yet
but these were showing their bright colors...bird of paradise.

I'm not sure what kind of trees these are but they look interesting.
This was a small food court area.

I'm sure this looks pretty in summer with the vines...
but that day the vines were bare and not green.

Inside the main entrance...more stone and huge overhead windows.
Light was streaming in from everywhere.

This is a scale model of the entire complex...

And this is the first piece of art you see inside.

As you leave the main entrance building
there is a huge open courtyard.

There are fountains...
and little seating areas scattered all around.
Unfortunately it was very windy and chilly
when we were there.

If you get the chance and like museums I'd say this would be one to visit. I have a few photos from inside the museum that I'll share another day. I didn't take too many. They are fairly strict about photos and in fact, I took one photo that was in an area where they weren't allowed! I was reprimanded!! Also some of the photos didn't come out due to the dim lighting they use for some of the displays...mostly to help preserve them.

And's a photo of me and HB

That's all for now............

I'm on Jennibellie!!!

Hi everyone...and no, I haven't fallen off the earth. Things have just been a bit hectic around here and most of the art I've been doing I can't show yet. Yesterday we were gone all day...we visited The Getty Museum and I have lots to show and tell about that but first I wanted to tell you about something else that has happened.

I'm being featured on Jennibellie's blog!! Please use the link to go read about it. I apologize for being late letting you know but I didn't get the email until sometime yesterday (and I was gone all day and into the evening) so I couldn't tell you earlier.

Jenny also did a piece on Facebook and on Twitter.

Spring At My House...

No art today...I'm working on several things but I'm not ready to share them yet. But for all my friends who are longing for spring I thought I'd let you see what's happening in my yard...

Click to view larger on any photos

This is the decorative plum tree
in my front yard...the one that
drives me crazy when all the little
cherry-size fruit falls to the ground.
They make such a mess.

These photos were taken within minutes of each other
and with nothing done to them...
one minute it's cloudy and the next the sun is shining.
The sky is really that blue today.

And here's a patch of the back yard where
the dandelions are already starting to appear.
Looks like we need to fertilize
and maybe even plant some grass seeds in this spot.

So that's a little hint of spring to tide you over until it arrives in your neck of the woods. It isn't quite as warm as yesterday but it's still very nice outside today. I hope your day is good, too.

Miss Kitty Revised...

Not much to show you today...I worked on Miss Kitty a bit more and here's what she looks like now...

I gave her a dress and a necklace,
and added some golden highlights to her hair.
I think I'm finished with her now.

I spent a fair amount of time outside today.
It was 75ยบ today!!
We all worked in the yard and enjoyed the sunshine.

Only one more week until my son goes back to Alaska
so I want to spend as much time with him as possible.

It's a First For Me...

I am participating in my first ever art journal round robin. I did do a couple of spreads in an art journal for Mary but it was at the end of her journal that had made the rounds. This is my first time doing one from the beginning and I'm happy to be doing it with MaryAndria, and Danielle. We will each get a journal for about a month at a time and then send it on to someone else.

Here are the two spreads I did in my journal...

This is the first two pages and I just put the names of each person on here.
I don't consider it one of the spreads...
more of an introduction.

This is the first spread I did in my journal.

This is the second spread...
it's more vibrant in person.

I'm sure there will be lots of wonderful art to share with you as these journals pass around from one to the other.

And just because I haven't shared them, here are the two spreads I did for Mary's journal back a couple of months ago...

I apologized to Mary at the time because I wasn't doing my best work right then. I hope she forgave me!
