Getting Back Into the Studio...

Yesterday was another play date with Juanita and Jeanette. This time I showed them how to do an art journal spread. Neither one of them have ever done art journaling so I started off with something fairly basic. Here's what I did...

Simple blocks of color, some pieces of napkins, stamps, some magazine strip borders, and a few dots and that's it. We had fun and it was a beautiful day...we even had a bite to eat out on the patio.

I've also started a couple more of my Bohemian Girls. I hope you can see this first one. I've just lightly sketched in the beginning of her...

The second one is a bit farther along...

And as you can see, I'm doing a full-length girl this time.

These are just in the beginning stages but I hope to work on them more this week. I will most likely take them to work on during the painting group. They know by now that I sketch more than I paint when I'm there. It's so much easier to just grab a sketchbook and some pens and pencils than it is to bring all my paints, brushes, etc.

I don't think I'd ever do good at plein air painting because I don't like anyone watching me while I paint. I don't mind when I'm sketching. Is that weird? I think it might be because I'm much more comfortable and confident about sketching than I am about painting.

I hope you've been having some fun.

My Art Journal Comes Home...

For once I have some art to show you! It isn't mine though. You may remember that I have been participating in an art journal round robin with DanielleMary, and Andria. My art journal came home to me so I thought I'd share it with you.

First are the spreads done by Mary...

Now here are the ones done by Andria...

And here are Danielle's...

All in all I have a beautiful art journal filled with art from my friends. At times it was a struggle to do the spreads in their journals...maybe if I do another round robin I should make sure it's during cooler weather! I'm glad I did this though. It was my first round robin ever.

Thanks to Danielle for organizing it and for keeping us on schedule, and thanks to Mary and Andria for participating. I'll treasure this journal for years to come!

My Painting Group and Something new for August...

Today is the first of two days of the painting group  this week (Thursday afternoon and Friday morning) at the senior center. I took this pic last week and then didn't post it...

It has the wrong date on it...it should be July 19 but that's okay. We had a good turnout that day. There were some others that I didn't get in the picture. You can see my drawing pad in the lower center and that's Jeanette right next to it. The instructor, Debbie, is way at the back in a bright pink shirt with a white apron...click on the pic and you should be able to find her.

On a completely different subject, I read this blog post on Snap's blog. It's all about  The August Break and it sounded like just what I need. I don't do much creating during the hot summer months, as you can probably guess by the lack of anything artsy on my blog recently. But I think I can manage to post a photo each day and if not I'll post them every other day or whatever works for me. At least there won't be a big blank spot here on my blog.

So beginning on August 1st I'll be participating...
Take a look at this project and it might be right for you, too.

My Play Date...

I didn't think it would be this long between posts. And I still don't have a lot of art to show you but I did have an art play date today. Two of my friends from the senior center came over and we spent the day playing and making ATCs...

Juanita, Me, and Jeanette
Jeanette and I did not plan to wear matching shirts
but I guess we really are on the same wave length.

Look at that mess on the work table!
And those smiles...
We had so much fun that we decided to make this a weekly thing.

Jeanette with one of her pieces.

Juanita taking Jeanette's picture...

Juanita made a beautiful greeting card but I didn't get a photo of it. We were too busy talking and laughing. I'm so happy to have found these two artistic friends who live close by. I've always been so envious of everyone who had art play dates because I didn't know anyone around here that did art. But now I do!

I promise there will be some art to show you in the next day or so.
I'm inspired by these two friends!

Me and The Original Rubber Stamp Convention...

To all of you who have asked, yes...my back is doing much better. So much better that yesterday I was able to go to the Rubber Stamp Convention in Carson, CA and walk most of the day. It was great! My friend, Juanita, from the senior center drove us and I was thankful for that since it took us about an hour and 30 minutes to get there.

Lots and lots of rubber stamps but also lots of other things, too. We had a fun day looking at everything, oohing and aahing over all the beautiful papers and displays of inks and sprays and stamp pads, etc. Juanita is in the painting group at the senior center and we hit it off immediately. She's so much fun.

Here are a few photos I took at the convention...

Of course, Tim Holtz products were very prominent.

I love her red hair!!
And her art journals were so cool.
I didn't get her name but I know I've seen her picture online before.

It was difficult to take photos because I had my hands full of other things most of the time!

And this is Juanita doing a little "make and take" tag...

She looks so serious but most of the time we were laughing and yakking.

I was a good girl and didn't spend too much moola.
Here is what I bought...

I said I wasn't going to buy a gelli plate but I did! I bought the 8" x 10" plate so you know what I'll be doing today. I also bought some Dylusions spray inks and a couple of small stencils. Believe me, I could have spent a LOT more money but I didn't want to take out a loan for art supplies!!

Thank you, Juanita, for a fun day.
We're already planning for next year's convention!!

Our Anniversary Photo...

Still not much art going on. My back is a bit better but I'm still taking it easy. So since I have nothing else to show you here is one of the photos we had taken on our anniversary last month...

 Me and HB
(without our glasses)

The background is a little weird but I guess that's okay. We just went to one of those places in the mall. This is also the outfits we wore in the fashion show. I had a black jacket over my top then but in the pictures I didn't want it.

I guess we're not too bad for almost 70 (me) and 65 (HB)!!

I'm Not Really Back...

I know I was just absent from blogging for almost a month and now it seems I'm absent again. But this time it's because I'm having lots of problems with my back and I can't sit at the computer for any length of time.

Not sure what I did but several days ago my back started giving me problems...mostly when I get up or try to sit down. Once I'm standing it isn't too bad but it's the getting up and down that's a problem. And sitting.

So forgive me for once again not being here...and there's been no art done with the exception of me trying to finish up the last go 'round of the art journal round robin I'm in.

Hopefully I'll be back in a few more days.

A Useful Little Tip...

It's still hot around here so I haven't been very inspired to make art. So rather than not post anything I thought I'd pass on a little tip. You may already do this but it's worth repeating.

When I buy stickers or other pretty embellishments to use in my art I always scan them into my computer. That way I can print them out again on sticky back paper or just on plain paper and use glue to adhere them. This way you stretch your $$ and can use favorite stickers over and over again.

I also do this with other ephemera...pictures from magazines, old papers, sheet music, etc. It lets me be a little less anxious about using a favorite sticker or embellishment because I know I can print another one later.

Here's a look at my work table today...

what a mess, huh!
Nothing seems to be working so I just quit and left it all right there.

Here's something else I did today...

I un-mounted several of my rubber stamps...mostly ones that I use to add texture.
I like to have them more flexible so I can stamp just portions of them.

That's all today.
Happy 4th of July to everyone in the US!!

Don't You Wanna Come Visit??

Still no art to show you but I thought I'd let you all drool over our weather (NOT) with this photo I took yesterday...

Don't you wish you were here?!!
More of the same today although a little cooler.
Still in triple digits though.

I'm actually working in my art journal today.
Nothing finished yet.
