Now For Some Red Flowers...

Finally I have some art to show you. It's been a busy week but I had to get this painting finished because it's the one I'm putting in the art show at the Senior Expo this week.

Similar to my recent blue flowers, this one is on a smaller canvas...only 16 x 20.

I had a difficult time getting all the reds, oranges, and yellows to show in the photo. It looks flatter than it does in real life.

This one still doesn't pop off the page like the blue flowers I did but I think it turned out okay. There won't be any judging at the show but we can sell things if we want to although I'm not sure how many people will be there to buy art! It's mostly a health related thing with lots of free screenings for anyone over 65.

Now I'm off to prepare things for today's class. We're going to be doing layered backgrounds. That should be fun and messy!

Keeping Busy...

Busy, busy, busy!!! As if I don't already have enough to do, yesterday I signed up as a volunteer to help set up the library book sale which is beginning next week.

(image from Google Images ~ this is a spot where I could spend hours!)

So today I'll spend the morning at the library and then head over to Legacy Commons for the afternoon painting group. Tomorrow I'll do the reverse with painting in the morning and library in the afternoon. Saturday is a bit open for now but I'll most likely help out at least a couple of hours then, too. I also have to squeeze in a gift bag and greeting card class done by my friend Juanita.

I like supporting the library and it's only $2 to get a Friends of the Library card. Where we live I'm lucky to have two different libraries to choose from. I have cards for both. The one that's closest to us is a local library but the one where I'm volunteering is part of the Los Angeles Public Library system. I use that library all the time because I can request any book they have in the system and it will be brought to the library branch where we are. And believe me, I make good use of that service!

Now I only have to find a little bit of art time at home to finish up a new painting that will be in the art exhibit at the Senior Expo next week. I'll work on it during the painting group but I'm sure I won't finish it then.

I'll try to have some WIP photos for you next time.

Some Cake and Some Art...

Now that all the celebrating is over I can show you some art. But I have to share my cake with you first.

Of course it had purple decorations but inside it had fresh strawberries and whipped cream!

Open wide!

Come on over and I'll give you a piece of cake.
Now for some art...

I finally finished the flower painting I was working on. This canvas is 12" x 36". I took this to our painting group and everyone loved it. They said the flowers just seem to jump off the canvas.

Here's a bit of a close-up.
HB likes this one so much he says I can't sell it!

And I started working on another painting...
One that has been sitting here for several months.

I did the background and then saw the eyes but didn't know how to do them. I want her to look as if she's coming out of the background. I finally just decided to jump in and start painting the eyes. I have a long way to go with this one but at least I've got a good start.

Now I'm off to Legacy Commons. Today they have their monthly birthday celebration for anyone who has a September birthday. And then it will be time for my journaling class. Today we're going to do tape transfers.

I Am Truly Amazed...

I must say, it's not half bad turning 70! I have been completely overwhelmed by gifts, cards, emails and phone calls from everyone. I feel like a queen!

As promised I have another gift to share with you, and as it turns out I now have two beautiful gifts to share. Last week I received a package all the way from Norway!! Laila sent me a birthday gift. Actually she sent me two gifts! This is the first one...

A gorgeous, hand-knit, soft-as-a-cloud, perfect color gray shawl!

It's just the right color for me since I wear a lot of gray and black.
I love color but seem to keep my clothing more neutral.

Just look at the delicate design in this.
Isn't it beautiful?
And aren't I a lucky gal??

As if the shawl wasn't enough, Laila also included one of her mandalas.

All done by hand on hand-made paper!
I wish you could see both of these gifts in person
because they are truly amazing.

Thank you, Laila!!
I love it all.
Then on my birthday another package arrived.
This time it was from Zorana

Just look at this beautiful PURPLE gift!!

If you go to Zorana's blog she has a video
showing how she created this bird.
It's so perfect. I love it.

And just look at that PURPLE moleskine journal
and the PURPLE pens, pencil, and crayon.
Does she know me or what?!!

And it was all wrapped up in this PURPLE paper!
Thank you, Zorana!

Laila and Zorana, you make me feel like such a special person because of these lovely gifts. I can't begin to tell you how much I appreciate your kindness and generosity. All in all this has been a memorable birthday. Thank you to Gail, too for the beautiful wall hanging I shared earlier...and to everyone who sent me wishes and cards. I'll remember this birthday for a looooong time.

An Evening Out...

Last night HB and I were out on the town. We went to an art reception that featured Debbie, the art instructor for our painting group. It was Debbie, her husband, Mike, and three other artists showing their work. Before I show you some of my photos from the evening I should tell you that the lighting was beautiful but not conducive for taking photos!

This is Debbie...she's such a fun person.
I just love her.

These are a few of Debbie's paintings.

I love these tigers!

Debbie teased me that this one should have been titled
Ode to Janet
because it was my influence that inspired her!

Debbie, Juanita, and Jeanette
with me and HB in the mirror.

Mike, Debbie, and George one of the artists from
our painting group.
Those are Mike's paintings in the background.

It was a lovely setting and the food was delicious.
I think everyone had a good time and we saw a lot of beautiful art.

Next time I'll share one more birthday gift with you...
actually it might be Sunday before I get the post up.
I'll be busy turning 70 tomorrow!!

Working in My Art Journals...

Thanks for all your comments and birthday wishes. I still have one more gift to share with you but for today I thought I better show you some art.

I've been working more in my art journals due to the class.
Here are some recent spreads...

(click on pictures to view larger)
I love this quote!
Simple spread...
paint, images from books/magazines
and a quote.

I started this one in class on Monday...
finished it at home.
Again, very simple...
paint, flowers cut from book pages,
and stamped word.

I had a hard time getting a good photo of this one.
I saw something online that inspired me for this...
can't remember who or where though.
Paint and paint pens.
It looks better in real life...
the colors don't show up very good here.

That's about all I have for now.
I'm still working on the blue flower painting.

My BFF Really Knows Me...

On Saturday I will be turning 70 years old!! It seems so odd to say that because I don't feel that old but those are the facts. I was born in 1943 and here it is 2013. I can't argue with the numbers.

You probably know that Gail and I have been friends since we were about nine years old. She is more like family to me rather than a friend, and she knows me so well. Look what she sent to me for my birthday...

This beautiful wall hanging all done in purples!

This is a close-up of the image she printed on the fabric.
Those are my maternal grandparents and that little
girl on the bike is me!

Gail always sends me handmade, personal gifts which I love.

Thank you, Gail! You're the BEST!

My Second Day of Teaching...

Yesterday was my second class for Art Journaling 101 and we had a good turn out. There were a few people who were not there from the first class but they had already told me they wouldn't be available this week. One was out-of-town and a couple of others were in another class for a few weeks. They're doing a nutrition class this month and it overlaps with my class.

I did manage to get a couple of quick photos of some of the people. We had three tables set up but I only photographed one and part of another because I had some people who didn't want to be in the pictures...

This is one of the tables.
Juanita was sitting at the end but was up when I took the picture.

This is Debbie and her husband, Mike.
She is the instructor for our painting group.

Here's my friend, Jeanette at one of the other tables.

Sorry about the angle of this one...
this is Barbie and it was her first time at the class.

There were nine people for my second class. There were actually two men, Mike and Wes, but Wes was at one of the tables that didn't get photographed. I'm pleased with the turn out. I'm sure it will fluctuate as more people learn about it.

Journaling and Painting...

It's been 10 days since my last post! Where does the time go?? Tomorrow I'll have my second art journaling class and I haven't even told you about the first one.

It was so much fun. I had 12 people show up and was thrilled with that many. And I even have one man!! I had planned to take a lot of photos but I guess you know what happened...I got caught up in the class and completely forgot about photos. One of the women from the front office came in and took a few but now they can't find them. If they do I'll post them here, and I'll try to remember to take some tomorrow.

The first class was mostly about supplies and then we did a simple page, just scraped some paint onto the pages with an old credit card and then added images from magazines. I had some people who just jumped right in and started and then some who needed more guidance and encouragement. I enjoyed it and I think everyone else did, too. I know we laughed and had a lot of fun. I have several things lined up that I want to do so I don't think it will be tough for me to come up with ideas but if anyone out there wants to make suggestions please feel free. This is a beginners class so anything goes.

Here is another simple page I did...

That little section on the bottom left was a picture of a gate but when I turned it sideways I thought it would be a good place to journal.

And I've started another painting...

Just a couple of sneak peeks...

This canvas is about 12" x 36". I covered it with book pages and then brayered on some greens and blues. So far I'm happy with how it's going and I'll share it when it's finished.

Our painting group at Legacy Commons is going to have a booth at the local Senior Expo next month and we can each display one painting so I need to get busy and get something ready. The painting above is too big to go in the exhibit so I'll start something else very soon.

Lots has been going on and I've been super busy so once again my blogging has taken a back seat. I do have something beautiful to show you in the next couple of days...I got an early birthday present from my best friend, Gail. She always sends me such wonderful gifts. I'll share it soon.

And Even More Journal Pages...

First of all, I must apologize for not responding to comments recently - either here on my blog or in emails. I'm sure you're tired of hearing this but it has been very hot and I just lose my energy when it's like this. Be assured I do read each and every comment and I appreciate them. I promise to do better when the weather cools off. The way it's going that should be sometime around November!
Now on to other things. I got out my old Gut Art book that I made when I took Mystele's very first Gut Art class. There are several pages that I never finished so I've been working on them (to use in my class) in the early mornings and late at night. Here they are...

The page above had some old sandpaper on it so I thought the hand was perfect.

Sorry the cat page is so dark.
It really isn't in real life.

This page is quite small.
I think I used a postcard for the base of it.

Just a reminder!

And this one still needs some words.

I hope wherever you are that you have cool breezes and sunny days. And I hope you do something fun today. I'm spending the afternoon with the painting group and then going to the library this evening to learn how to download books to my e-reader. I love our library!!

It's Almost Class Time!

In less than a week I'll be teaching my very first Art Journaling 101 class at Legacy Commons. I'm excited about it and yesterday I worked on a poster that will be in the front lobby...

You can click on the picture to see it a bit larger. I used a piece of foam core as my substrate. This poster will sit on an easel so it needed to have some stiffness to it. Below are some close-ups...

Mostly I used magazine images, some scrapbook papers, washi tape around the edges, and some markers and paint pens. I had a lot of fun making this and I hope it inspires people to try my class. What do you think...would it make you want to take my class if you were a beginner?

I'm a Lucky Gal...

Over the years that I've been blogging I've been lucky enough to have received so many wonderful pieces of art from all my artsy blog friends. And I treasure each piece. Now I have a new piece to add to my collection and it's a beauty!

A couple of months ago Lisa had a giveaway. You could choose to have her do something specific if you won or you could leave it up to her to decide. Well, I won the giveaway and I chose to let Lisa make whatever she thought I would like...because really, I like everything she makes!

The package arrived a few days ago and I was ripping it open before I even got in the door with it. And then when I saw the piece I just sat down and stared at it for several minutes. It's absolutely gorgeous!

This photo does not do it justice but I think you can see all the work she put into this piece. It's painted fabric and everywhere I look I see something else I missed the first time. There are beads and little mirrors and all sorts of embellishments...

This wall hanging is about 10.75" x 12" without the fringes. The dragonfly is dimensional as are some of the flowers. I wish you could see it in person.

And this is the card she sent along with it...

I think it's so cute.

Thank you, Lisa!!
I'm going to give this new piece of art a special place in my studio.

More Journal Pages...

Are you tired of my journal pages yet?? It seems I'm obsessed with art journaling right now and it's all I think about when I'm in the studio. Here are a couple of new spreads I just finished...

I was having my morning "coffee" and decided to journal about it.

I used some tissue paper with coffee cups on it
and then drew on a larger cup...

Then I drew the jar of my "coffee"...
and of course I had to mention
coffee ice cream! One of my favorites.

The above spread came about when I cut out this image from
a magazine. She just seemed sad to me so I went with that.

HB and I are having a quiet holiday week-end. We needed some days of doing nothing. The weather has been hot and humid so I'm laying low!
