A Gift for a Friend...

Today was a bittersweet day. When HB and I first checked out Legacy Commons, our local senior center, CC was the first person we met. She took us all around and basically told us all about the activities available. From the first moment I met her, I was hooked. She is such a beautiful person, warm and friendly and helpful. And today was her last day on the job. She retired today and the center gave her a big party.

Because I know CC likes bright colors I painted this 12" x 12" piece for her...

And here we are together (she has the painting upside down!)...
Isn't she gorgeous!

and what a surprise...I'm wearing purple!

This is the card I did for her...

There were lots of tears and smiles and laughter today. I'll miss CC but we've promised to stay in touch. When you find a good friend it's good to hold on to them.

Drawing My Girl...

Recently I took a little class called "The Land of Light and Shadows" by Danielle Donaldson. One of the projects was to draw creative girls. Hers were so cute and I usually don't do cute but as soon as I started to sketch, my girls all came out with aspects of Danielle's. I'm going to keep going with this until I get something that is more me but I'll share with you what I did so far....
 This was my first one.
Her dress is too long but otherwise she is cute...just not me.

She has a shorter dress but I think it's still too long...
and her top is too angular for me.

More tries but still not me.

Love her legs but her face shape is wrong
and I still don't like that angular top.

Now this girl is getting a bit better...
she has "boobs" (like me!) but I'm still not happy with her.
I changed her position on this one but not sure about it. I like her cape, her hair, and her legs but that's about all. I'll keep drawing these girls and sooner or later I'll find "my" girl. So far it's been fun.

Finished and Unfinished...

Today I'm rushing around getting ready for my art journaling class this afternoon but I wanted to share a couple of quick things I've been doing over the weekend.

This is a journal spread that I'm working on...have been for several weeks! I find that I glue down my collage pieces and then it takes me quite some time to do the rest of the work. This is still a WIP. I keep adding things here and there...

Of all places, I recently found some paint pens at Wal-mart!! They're called Painters and cost a bit less than $2 each. Most of the ones in our store were medium point but there were a few fine points. I bought eight of them and so far I like them. I used the pink and red ones on this spread. I'll still buy the Sharpie poster paint pens in black and white ultra-fine but for colors, these Painters work good.

I have found that Teesha Moore and Alisa Burke are the two people who influence me the most. Probably because their styles are closest to mine. Their styles are not the same but somehow they each have things that I like, and they come naturally to me. For a long time I have thought I should develop my own style but after many years of thinking on that I've decided I already have my own style. Even if something looks a lot like what others do, it's still got my spin on it because I am the one who created it. As Marie Antoinette said, "There is nothing new except what has been forgotten." And Anton Chekhov said, "There is nothing new in art except talent." I'm not sure how much talent I have compared to some others but I love what I'm doing so I'll continue.

While looking through one of my journals I found this next page with the background and a very light pencil sketch of the woman so I decided to finish her...

I'm not thrilled with her eyes but I like the rest of it...and at least I finished it! Many times things are in my journal half-finished and they remain that way. I'm trying to remedy that situation.

That's all for now...I'll be back soon with some more. I'm trying to do better with my blogging!

I Love B&W Drawings...

Ala Alisa Burke here is a page of flowers I did recently...

(sorry it's a bit fuzzy)

I think I could draw these flowers in my sleep. I've been doing them for years...even before I knew of Alisa. My friends used to call them Janet's fantasy flowers.
***************************************************
And now for a little rant...am I the only one who hates it when you click on something on Pinterest and it takes you to the entire blog and not to the exact post where the picture came from??? Then I have to spend more time than I'd like surfing through the blog in hopes of finding the post that explains the picture. The other complaint is when I click on something and it just shows you a picture without connecting to the original site at all. Frustrating! But I still love Pinterest and get lots of ideas from there.

I saw something similar to this on Pinterest and wanted to try it so here is my version...

Today I'm going to spend all day in the studio. I hope to have more paintings to share either tomorrow or the next day. See you then............

I'm Painting Again...

Not only have I been drawing and working in my art journal but I've actually been painting, too. I was really in a slump when it came to that. But finally I broke through and here's what I did...

Planting the Earth

This is 24 x 24. I had to crop the photo a bit. It has a ton of layers on it, and that pinkish section on the left lower part does not really look pink in real life. I'm not sure why it does here.

A Sad Face...

I've been working on this drawing for a long time. I did her face and sectioned off her hair but then left it. I knew I wanted to add lines but just never got in the mood to do them until a couple of nights ago. HB and I were watching TV and it seemed the perfect time to zone out.

Stained Glass Painting...

As promised, here is something else I did recently...this was an experiment inspired by Donna Downey.

She used hot glue and water-soluble crayons to do hers but I just used paint. I used an old canvas that was not too terribly smooth so it's not a great piece but I like how it turned out. And it was an experiment!

More to come tomorrow...

I Finally Did Some Art!!

I know I've been absent from my blog a lot and mostly that's due to having nothing to share. I've been uninspired to do any art for quite some time...but finally I think I'm getting back to the studio. I have several things to show you but I'm going to tease you into coming back to see more.

Today I'm sharing a journal page I did. I was inspired by Teesha Moore. I belong to her Artstronauts Club and she recently shared a video called "Overkill Journaling." I had a page already started so I just continued on with it and I think I did some overkill journaling of my own! I even used her word on mine.

It's definitely a busy page! I did this in my Canson Mix Media journal so it's mostly collage. I did use colored pencils and my Sharpie paint pens but no paint due to the crappy paper.

So if there's still anyone out there reading my blog be sure to come back tomorrow to see more of what I've been doing.
